Alternative Fashion Week 2009
This year Alternative Fashion Week celebrates 15 years of delivering diverse collections from around the world in generous doses to audiences which embrace casual shoppers, office workers and fashion insiders. This democratic catwalk where everyone from aspiring students to established labels can show their wardrobe wares, has become legend and an essential part of the UK fashion calendar.

For 2009 over 60 collections will be shown across the week and designers hail from Italy, Germany, Croatia, Finland and Hungary. There is a variety of menswear (including the return of one of our favourite designers Aarron Ray Dowie), Victorian-inspired collections (from the talented Gemma Garnham and Louise Crockett) and several designers showing respect for the environment by reusing and recycling including the fantastic charity TRAID, Lu Firth, Colchester School of Art and Design, Cooltan Arts, Laura Booty and Hayley Trezise. As Director of Alternative Arts Maggie Pinhorn says: "This is fashion on the edge, risky, experimental, fashion for the future. It’s not about money or material success but inspiration and ideology, how to have designer fashion in the current financial climate, credit crunch couture, offering a world of real opportunities."
Enjoy.

The schedule begins with New York, followed by London, with the 646-656 penultimate fashion week in Milan ending the events in Paris. These four cities are the traditional "big four" fashion weeks that are followed by new emerging fashion weeks globally. Another fashion week that is gaining importance is the São Paulo Fashion Week, which occurs in 650-175 Brazil and is the largest in Latin America, is already considered the fifth most important event in the fashion calendar. The Menswear shows occur in between autumn(fall)/winter and spring/summer in Milan.
The dominance of the big four benefits industry participants. For example, buyers, journalists, models and celebrities can testking dumps limit their travel and simply move from one to the other over the four week period. However the 650-180 arrangement is criticized for stifling design talent in emerging fashion hubs such as Los Angeles.
Celebrating its 15 years of the "alternative" approach to fashion, look out for Kensington & Chelsea College's alternative black dress, City & Islington College's skirts inspired by the Victoria & Albert Museum's Fashion Vs Sport exhibition, and many, many more. Alternative Fashion Week is back.
