“Geekess in need” – Vintage Data
I need to come clean I am, a Geekess! , phew that feels better. I love technology and trying to work out the puzzle. During the last six months I have been digitally archiving my work from the past 16 years. (Overwhelming)Been having a website designed by the fab Jez, (novemberfive )which went live this Sunday ! In My time I have had a few computers and IT storage solutions, I can tell ya. I had a giant apple Mac in the 90s so big he needed a room. Then fell on hard times (come on this is fashion if you haven’t your not proper fashion!) Was given a PC laptop by my brother in 2000 and this combined with jumping around on friends Macs (thanks Gitta and Karl) when they weren’t using them. Kind of a commune technology set up thing. Then got my Dell Baby laptop, she is such a silver dream machine. So the consequence of all of this is that I had my work saved on a whole range of techno retro gear, in all sorts of programmes and formats. I am talking SyQuest disks and still got and the machine. So the last bit of the current archive puzzle, how do I get an exhibition worth of Savage prints off a Zip disk 250MB? Grete an assistant tried for me in June asking around Soho print shops and The London College of Fashion, no joy just strange looks and a dodgy 100 zip machine that didn’t work. So as a last resort I sent out an email last Friday to my techy male friends subject “Geekess in need” My fiend Christian forwarded an email to his crew of IT mates asking if they could help me, so kind .To my joy and relief I got lots of help and suggestions, tips and even links to eBay. All this firmly proved to me that Chivalry was alive and well in cyber space.... I was really feeling the love in the rounds of group emails. Eventually won a 250mb zip machine on eBay 2 days ago. Why my IT quest? , that at times felt like an updated high tec Wizard of Oz. Time to take stock of all my work as I have had a lot of different outputs of expression over the years. Needed to consolidate what I have and think of it all. A bit like the data on the disks I suppose. Onwards and upwards into Cyber Space and beyond.
