The burbs look and lifestyle is definitely rubbing off on me big time, so much so that I have finally bagged the role of Creative Director, yes me Karen Jane. It’s a mini operation and enterprise with Keith (my fella) dealing in Mid Century Furniture and Home wear called “Found in England” and yes we find it all in England, so far. What, I hear you ask? Visually it’s the stuff of Abigail’s Party. We are talking G Plan and Ercol furniture. J & G Meakin, Midwinter and West German Ceramics and Pottery. I think it’s going to be the next big thing, a stand against fast furniture by re-using the best of the past.
We started in August with a space in an Antique Shop called Palace Antiques in Hampton Court (not the actual Palace but very near by, so posh.) We are learning the ropes and I am loving every minute of the eccentric buying and selling journey. Loads of blog material too! You should see the dealer’s style at the antique fairs, its way beyond the style seen on the mean streets of East London. One of the major pluses of doing this is that we are the kids, yes I will say it again we are the kids, on the antique scene! The older dealers keep saying "you won’t sell that I chucked one of those out the other day". Because of what they consider to be desirable is very different to your 30 and 40 year old retro loving hipster.
We have also got some furniture and ceramic bits in a pop up shop for the rest of January called 125 World in Shorditch. The 125 World shop is selling photography / fashion books from Steidl, Taschen, Thames & Hudson and Phiadon, limited edition art prints and classic retro furniture. I love how they have styled coffee table books on our 70s tile coffee tables. So obvious why have I not seen it done before? So simple yet so strong. 125 World is a must for any fashion image head wishing to expand their knowledge and be inspired by a bit of classic retro style.
Just got an email today that 125 World Shop is having a sale from tomorrow. I wonder if the Sarah Moon photography book I was mooning over made it to the sale? Dream on lady!
