Aertex's Paul Weller Birthday shirt

Beat SurrenderCover.jpgHappy Birthday Mr Weller. Today the greatest singer/songwriter this country has ever produced celebrates his 49th birthday. To mark the occasion, British shirt and underwear specialists, Aertex, has released a polo shirt replicating the one worn by Mr Weller on the cover of The Jam's last ever single, The Beat Surrender. Back in 1982, Weller wore a red button-down aertex polo shirt beneath a stripy blazer. It still looks good today.

Aertex was established in 1888 in Lancashire offering a "healthy" alternative to other shirting and underwear. Founder Lewis Haslam developed the idea of trapping air into the weave of fabric using holes. Air circulation means that the fabric can hold warmth as well as keeping the wearer's skin ventilated. The aertex shirt was a classic piece of PE kit for generations of British kids.

Aertex is selling the 'Weller' replicas in short sleeve and (a long-sleeve version will be introduced for autumn) in a choice of lemon, navy, white and light blue for £44.99. Sadly there are no red ones - which is odd considering this was Mr Weller's colour of choice - I asked Aertex why and was told, "red doesn't sell well". When I pointed out that the one worn in 1982 by Mr Weller was red and that would be my personal choice I was told that "1982 was a long tme ago."

Although we understand that Mr Weller is in no way formally associated with the release, we asked Aertex if they are sending him some shirts - since the brand is marketing them using the man's good name - and were told: "Yes, he's already had them."

sorry to veer off your topic here maz, but i used to wear this exact same cap sleeve tee with 'fetish' on it all the time back in the day as a homage to marc.

Noblr Locks, you did not. You used to wear leather Boss jackets as an homage to Derrck Trotter Smiling
I think Marcs fashion exploits are best kept secret.

Aertex? British shirt? - British Heritage? - British Bullsh*t

Come on, how can Aertex clothing be touted as British Heritage if it's made in some third world country.

I was a mod in the 70's and 80's and know my clothes.

The original shirt Paul Weller wore was a Ben Sherman.

Paul Weller is working with Ben Sherman and just introduced a line of clothing. Check out the Ben Sherman site.

you're Ben Serman aren't you?

@ mbs - Marc Almond was a listed Londoner on Robert Elms' Radio London show yesterday - you can hear it here.

www.bbc.co.uk/london

@Nicky Dolan - Aertex is proper British sartorial history - not sure where they are producing now, but will find out and post it up shortly.. Wouldn't be too surprised if it is China, Turkey or Portugal though - so little clothing is produced here in the UK anyore, innit?

Turkey it is - all Aertex production is in Turkey now.
