AFW Day 4 - The builders have been banned

One of the greatest attributes of Alternative Fashion Week is its inclusivity. Whether you are press, buyer, fashion scout, student or passer by, everyone is welcome to watch the show. But today I discovered that the builders who have been snapping the action on their mobiles whilst standing on the gantry above the catwalk, have been banned by Ballymore Property Developers.

Antiform and Ketchup's collection

The area around Spitalfields has been subject to major developments over recent years, and builders in the audience have become a regular feature of Alternative Fashion Week - last year a designer even put out a collection on the catwalk dedicated to them. Ballymore should be ashamed - their action goes against the entire spirit of the event.

Happily there were many positives today. Nina Flowers and Jesscia Sherlock have been selling their sustainable fashion wares in the Fashion Market all week and today we caught up with them to get the story behind Amoosi, their label which launched in December 2007. They have created jackets from old suits and a fantastic range of leather bags from old jackets all sourced from Oxfam. You would never look at their creations and think 'ethical' or 'worthy', it's simply a fab collection.

It was also inspirational to talk with Lizzie Antiform and Karen Ketchup who have joined their labels together to show and sell at Alternative Fashion Week. These ladies are truly committed to recycled fashion and create bang up to date new clothes from old. It looked amazing on the catwalk and you have to give them credit for skinning an arm chair to make a gorgeous leather jacket.

At Graduate Fashion Week 2007 we were blown away by the tailoring of Aaron Ray Dowie from Nottingham Trent. Catching up with him today we saw how his collection dedicated to hit men has developed and Aaron, who won second prize for menswear at GFW, has had some tremendous experiences in such a short time including working for River Island, TM Lewin and is head of menswear for Crombie. Well done Aaron - you are a true tailoring star.

Banardos are the official charity for Alternative Fashion Week so it was fitting that today's audience included a group of wee ones from the Spitalfields Children's Centre.
