Day Six
Fri, 19/09/2008 - 10:21pm
Bora Aksu's show was a dreamy delve into sheer chiffon and delicately-constructed floaty dresses. It felt like a gentle massage to the senses. The tribe of Bora reigns supreme and no-one can compete with his romanticism. Av was in attendance with his son Guy on his arm - the child is almost 18 months he confessed to us, but he's been so busy he hasn't had much dad time!
From such a tranquil Bora start we headed to Scott Ramsey Kyle's off-schedule show which paid serious homage to the tabard. The Glasgow-born designer showed with Super Super last season but had his individual debut this season played with metallic tassels and embroidery on boxy shapes galore. There were some strong pieces - his black jacket and shorts with oversized square pockets especially - and he'd obviously had loads of fun making this collection.
Asish is a master of glamour with London attitude and he didn't disappoint with a bang-on collection fusing military-inspired pieces with gorgeous signature sequined outfits. We loved the seven of heart dress and hand print jump suit. Mr Gupta is a formidable talent. We'll be bringing you coverage of the Emma Bell off-schedule show which was a fun-fuelled circus with ghostly make-up.
Modernist at the Mango shop on Oxford Street was triumph despite the challenge to get there: snappers laden with equipment had to negotiate a path through the mass of shoppers and one poor professional fell over his camera case amid the throng. But it was a smoothly-executed show and the collection is exquisite. The Modernist duo have moved on considerably from last season and honed their focus. The colour palette embraced gentle whites, accentuated with black and lilac and purple; laser printed roses and laser cut panels on dresses, sheer blouses, tightly-fitted trousers, exaggerated hips on skirts and dresses all contributed to this beautiful collection that will see Modernist gain increasing repute.
Aminka Wilmont won Fashion Fringe two seasons ago and their second on-schedule showing was an impressive collection that incorporated leather trims on chiffon and zip creations over dresses and the most challenging shoes of LFW: wooden heels without soles attached to the foot by ribbons, well done the models for navigating the catwalk in these!
Off-schedule we caught up with Inbar Spector, a talent we spotted last season. Back on the schedule we went to MAN at the car park in Brewer Street. Christopher Shannon unleashed his tailored sportswear collection fresh from his MA at St Martins. First out was a vertical striped puffa jacket, then low-cut white and stripped trousers, shorts under-shorts and a sand 'hunter' jacket. A really impressive debut. Real clothes for real blokes. Hans Madsen is back for a second season at MAN and he loves his crochet knits. Medical influences and rolled up trousers reign. James Long mixed harem-style shorts with sheer shiny shirts and Topman Design ended the proceedings with a tight collection featuring blinding brightly coloured sweat top and pants combinations.
