howies' homage to teenagers
To celebrate its own passing into teenage years this summer, howies has produced a book exploring what it is like to be a teenager today. Founder David Hieatt says that now "We have to do things that have not been done before. We have to become an ideas company. In terms of the product we make, how that product is made, how we use the company to create debate about the environment and the world we live in".
The book itself starts on a Bob Dylan-esque photographic journey with snaps of teens holding up statements, this is followed by a feature on Argo Amateur Boxing Club in Glasgow with black and white documentary photos and accounts from the lads who use it. The Ratpak are a group of surfers from west Wales who share their passion for the waves; teenage mum's tell their own tales as do a bunch of BMX enthusiasts from Harrogate. With illustrations and insights throughout, it's a compelling book which is an interesting barometer of what concerns youth.
