Thursday at AFW kicks off with a collection from West Thames College. Mesh, tulle, lace and satin are among the materials used while styles vary from a black cocktail dress to a newspaper style strapless number.

Cherrie Camplin’s sculptural collection includes an orange mermaid inspired gown with ruffle detailing. Evoking feelings of glam-rock, we see electric colours including turquoise and purple. Bell-bottom trousers are juxtaposed with form fitting dresses.

Knee length socks with frill and lace detail are teamed with an ivory mini dress evoking feelings of romance and fairytale at Holly Dutton. Natural hues including mauve and pastel blue are displayed on high-waisted shorts and flirty skirts.

Exquisite knitwear is the order of the day at Rosie Boycott-Brown. Patchwork jumpers and dresses in natural, earth tones are a highlight as was the knitting needle dress, a forest green above knee dress with a quirky side detail accessorised with wooden knitting needles.

Croatian designer Zoran Aragovic of BiteMyStyle uses a playful colour palette, polka dots, stripes and tulle to evoke the circus.

Taking inspiration from the Olympics, Tower Hamlets A team Art showcases a quirky interpretation on sportswear. The five- circle symbol is found on every garment including a red hooded jacket that reads, “ Girls have Balls 2” on the back.

Goa is the inspiration for Salmena Carvalho’s collection. Clean, strong lines are found on dresses in yellow, pale pink and grey. A well tailored collection that uses wool, cotton and chiffon.

Shoeless models floated down the catwalk for Kira Anne Goodey and Tane Andrews’s collection. Inspired by the Churches and Cathedrals of Europe, we see a range of warm tones including forest green and brown and an array of garments including a green hooded trench coat with a fish tail finish.

Lucy Majerski’s “Romantic Grunge” collection is all about layers paying particular attention to the shoulder. Dark skinny trousers are juxtaposed with peach boleros finished with chiffon ruffle detailing.

Natalie Roberts’s black and white collection looks to the male tuxedo. Clean, sharp lines are contrasted with feminine ruffles with particular attention to the collar, cuff and shoulder.

Barnet College’s collection looks to nature and the secret life of plants, giving us a colourful and playful collection.

Hayley Trezise gives us a mixture of Bo-Ho chic and Victorian England. Unfinished hems and natural tones are juxtaposed with Victorian lace and ruffles. A forest green, strapless mini-dress with fish tail finish is of particular note.

London College of Fashion graduate Xia Sonia Xiao gives us a collection of strong, statement clothes. Illustrated tights are teamed with black figure hugging dresses and layered with cream wool jackets. A satin black, white and pale gold jumpsuit is detailed with floral graphics and is of particular note.

Swedish designer Wilfred Pletzinger subverts the idea of sports clothing with his collection. The Dutch football jersey is reworked into a dress, a bikini top becomes kneepads and a pair boxing shorts becomes a floor length skirt.

Today’s show ended with Derby University’s block colour collection. A series of white garments including a tulip-shaped skirt, a sheer dress detailed with butterflies and a loose, hooded dress.
