In March 2007 a new independent specialist clothing shop opened its doors on Linthorpe Road in Middlesborough. Set up by two mates with a lot of retail nous and experience, Superstar focuses on offering credible men's clothing, accessories, footwear and collectable toys.

Matilda Lee has been editor of The Ecologist Magazine's Green Pages for over two years and introduced an ethical fashion section the magazine, so she was perfectly placed to write a guide aimed at equipping us with the facts. "I have learned about the impacts of our addiction to cheap and disposable fast fashion" she says, "the toxic soup of chemicals that go into making our clothes and carbon emissions associated with our global industry."

Back in 1830 John Rich opened a wool mill in Plum Run, in Pennsylvania. After 15 years, he moved to a nearby town which today is known as Woolrich. John Rich specialised in creating clothes for workers including railway workers (for whom he developed special pockets for watches) and woodsmen (for whom he added extra large pockets to carry tools).
