Video feature: Collaborator's Guide @ b store
It's a balmy Saturday evening, mid October. We're headed for Savile Row, one of the most important locations in our nation's fashion history and despite its recent unfair derision by Armani, the Row is looking good in the twilight.
Tailoring establishments of old mingle with an incredible English Heritage building, the concrete police station and quirky shoe shops. Then, towards the corner with Old Bond Street is b store. No.24a.
A line of freezers fills the first window, elegant white objects without doors which house disparate luminous yellow painted objects - shoes, cups, a sieve. In the other, you can see a deep freeze which for launch night is filled with luminous yellow bags tied with a knot. Over 100 knotted bags are in the freezer and a couple of dozen hang on boards in the window. It's the work of Collaborator's Guide a newly-formed group of international artists/protagonists/people having a great time doing mad things.
We arrive with a bag of objects to freeze 'cos this is a participatory installation. Sacha, Bethany and Selwa from Collaborator's Guide happily accept our contribution and before you could finish your vodka tonic which came with a fruity slice of ice, they had lovingly placed our bits in freezable containers. We got a place in the deep freeze in store, but we don't know if our fuk.co.uk sticker, my business card, a nappy, a miniature mini (which fell off a keyring), a doll's head on a pencil (with weird coloured-in hair, don't ask), an orange flower, a wooden peg and London bus ticket, will make it into the window. Collaborator's Guide tell us that the window will display art objects, but Sacha does say that people may come and take away our frozen trinkets. "When you freeze two random things together they form a narrative, " he says and explains that Collaborators are "fearless" and to be a collaborator "you have to be willing to do something outside of yourself."
The installation coincides with the Frieze art fair which runs for two weeks in Regent's Park. From now until November 5 you can pop into b store, drop off your odds, sods and ephemerals and they'll freeze them for you. While you're there, you can see winter menswear collections by Spastor, Bernhard Willhelm, Peter Jensen, Carola Euler, Stiv Stodal, Alex Foxton and Ehud Joseph, shirts and ties handmade in London by U and womenswear by Aganovich and Yung, Spijkers and Spijkers, Michelle Lowe-Holder and bi la li.
