Future Classics fuk@lfw s/s 07
Mon, 18/09/2006 - 5:00pm On|Off, Royal Horticultural Halls, SW1 After a season away from the London catwalks, Julie Wilkins' Future Classics label is back and the return was very well-received. This is a focused womenswear collection which incorporates casual, ultra wearable pieces with bold statements in colour and print. The prints are strong and start with technicolour circles, which evolve into abstract less-defined shapes before breaking into striking exotic florals. As the designer told us, many "came about as accidents, which is the way I like to work!" Soft jersey tops with double vertical front pouch pockets are beautifully modernist, chiffon blouses are teamed with black leather mini skrts while simple fitted dresses feature big zips and zip panels. Ruched and draped jersey pieces really do reflect the classic intentions of this label and much of this collection is so utterly instantly wearable it's evident that it could appeal to a broad audience: alongside tunic frocks that are futuristic but not scary, breezy asymmetric shirts and delectable double-fronted blouses there are harder-edged garments in black leather, corset references and safety harnesses built into skirts, tops and dresses. In the main the colour palette is quite muted with olive green, white, black punctuated with pump-up-the-volume shades of orange, pink and (not our most favourite) mustard yellow. Big shout to the accessories - Future Classics has successfully rebirthed bumbags into body bags and also offers cool large-as-life clutch bags. Words: Marian Buckley |
