London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2008
Fri, 25/01/2008 - 9:41pm
London Fashion Week a/w 08 kicks off on Sunday February 10 and runs until Friday February 15 - six days packed with shows all over London. Once again, the official British Fashion Council venue is at the Natural History Museum, and this season there is one official catwalk there as well as the ever-growing exhibition.

Esthetica is back for the fourth season and from its modest start, is developing into a key part of the Fashion Week proceedings, featuring stands from 20 designers, companies and organisations all committed to ethical business. There are still designers who think that showing fur in London is acceptable, but their influence seems to be waning.
We are looking forward to seeing some debuts as well as catching up with designers whose progress we've been following. Julie Berube returns to the off-schedule catwalk after a season away, newcomers include CORE, Inbar Spector and, being launched with a low key presentation, Ossie Clark. A founder of WGSN has bought the Ossie label and AV aka Avsh Alom Gur, is the man in charge of designing the first collection.
This season, we're chuffed to have Maia Adams and Selene Pearson writing catwalk reports and Ian Gillett as our photographer. We have also hooked up with Brightonart and Mark Scarratt's team will be providing us with some catwalk videos. We'll also be taking time this season to check out what people attending the shows are thinking and wearing.
On and off-schedule there are a total of 98 shows across the six days! We'll do our best to bring you some corkers and share some genuine insights.
Enjoy.

Valentine's Day has proved to be a big day for London Fashion Week from the opening show by Asprey to the closing with a highly anticipated return from Vivienne Westwood. The second show of the day was by celebrity-favourite Luella. This season was not short on support with an A-list front row including Kelly Osbourne and Lily Allen. When looking at Luella's Autumn/Winter collection it's easy to see why she's so popular. Her clothes are the perfect combination of feminine, fun and modern.

Ten 16th century portraits of German or Italian gentlemen may show ten entirely different hats, and at this period national differences were at their most pronounced, as Albrecht Dürer recorded in his actual or composite contrast of Nuremberg and Venetian fashions at the close of the 15th century (illustration, right). The "Spanish style" of the end of the century began the move back to synchronicity among upper-class Europeans, and after a struggle in the mid 17th century, French styles decisively took over leadership, a process completed in the 18th century.
