Jacob Kimmie
Mon, 11/02/2008 - 11:00am Jacob Kimmie’s third London Fashion Week offering saw monochrome mod meet modern Klimt prints – an unusual combination that seemed to storm the Vauxhall Fashion Scout catwalk. The collection entitled ‘La Belle Excentrique’ opened with a series of black and white outfits which, when paired with smoky eyes and towering top-knotted hair, conjured up a playful 1960s feel. White buttons are stark additions to a flared black overcoat and thigh-high PVC boots add character to girlish tiered skirts. Injections of colour arrived with tomato red patent heels and cerise opaques. What seems to give extra life to the collection is the collaboration with Cornish artist Andy Nottle. His work on canvas provided inspiration for Jacob and yet again the fine line between art and fashion has been erased with some brilliant printed mini-dresses bringing a kaleidoscope of colour amongst the ebony/ivory combination. Andy’s work is like a 21st century interpretation of Klimt’s patterns and are the perfect addition to a fluid jersey dress with pleated front. As well as transforming his work on canvas into a textile print, Jacob also offered the artist a dress to customise. The result? A glittering, gold, beaded dress paired with trailing net cape. More of this collaboration please! In his own words Jacob promised to focus the collection on the ‘best of British craftsmanship’. With his own careful tailoring and the introduction of innovative collaborations with British artists it looks like Mr Kimmie is well on the way to fulfilling his promise. Words: Selene Pearson |
