Spijkers En Spijkers

Sex and fashion are regular, but often volatile, bedmates whose couplings must be deftly handled if they are to succeed. In the right quatities a dash of sauce can lift a collection to dizzy heights; get your technique wrong however and the result can be a bit of a flop.

For aw08 identical twins, and Spijkers and Spijkers design duo, Truus and Riet Spijkers took Scarlett O'Hara as their muse. The aim was to introduce romance as a theme whilst assuring us that 'being a liberated woman does not mean to ignore one's sexuality, but to embrace its power'.

On paper, and with a lighter touch, this exploration of ideas might have worked but in reality the shiny red stilettos, sequined nipple covers, black stockings and sheer fabrics were too much slut, too little sass.

Romantic ruffles and voluminous taffeta capes combined with tailored skirts and trousers were interesting. And quirky accents – a smattering of camouflage print and cut-away necklines creating trompe l'oeil men's ties – added an all-important element of fun.
