Alternative Fashion Week 2007

Over five hundred designers have applied to show at the UK's Alternative Fashion Week in 2007.

"We've had more applications than ever" Maggie Pinhorn of Alternative Arts told us, "and they've come from all over the world." Last year's event received widespread coverage from newspapers, magazines and several European televsion companies. "We don't stand on ceremony at Alternative Fashion Week" says Maggie, "there is no VIP area and the front row is just as likely to be filled by members of the public as fashion editors."

AFW has a reputation for being a truly democratic fashion event. Designers get to show on the catwalk free-of-charge and have access to a backstage area where big egos are redundant. Last year, we broadcast a series of audio podcasts from the event including interviews with designers, organisers and judges. The winners were Brighton pair Stevi Jelbart and Emma Sandham-King.

AFW 2007 will take place from Monday March 19 until Friday March 23 and the Spitlafield's catwalk will feature over 60 individual designers as well as colleges. Although all the catwalk places have been allocated, it's not too late to apply for an exhibition stand at AFW's fashion market. "The price is the same as last year," Maggie confirms. "£100 for the week - cheap as chips." The market is a great way for designers launching new labels to introduce themselves to customers, get feedback on their wares as well giving them the opportunity to make a few quid. You can apply directly to Alternative Arts and if you do, take it from us that accessories tend to sell really well, so if you have a label make sure in addition to setting up stall with your clothing you offer bags, badges, belts, purses etc - items which do not require trying on or large amounts of cash.
