Howie's nut buttons
You have to admire Howies. The label goes to amazing efforts to achieve ethical and sustainable clothing and has been a pioneering force in the UK since its launch as a T-shirt label in 1995. Last season, instead of spending money on a photoshoot, they decided to spend the money on building a shed to house an eco-T-shirt print shop. This season, give them respect for introducing buttons made from nuts.
As usual, the Howies team were looking at new ways of reducing the label's impact on the environment and decided to see if they could use something other than plastic to make buttons. The catalogue tell us that "We know that nature already has the answers to most man-made questions, so we looked there. But finding a natural material that has similar properties to man-made buttons was pretty difficult. In the end we discovered some buttons which are made from the Tagua nut, it comes from a palm tree called Phytelephas Macrocarpa (an ivory nut palm grown in South America). The nuts are gathered and dried out for 4-8 weeks, sorted and sliced ready to be sewn onto our organic cotton jeans/trousers."
Howies has used the Tagua nut buttons on its women's shoreline trousers, West Coast trousers and men's and women's Seeker jackets. The buttons are 100% natural, won't melt or break and Howies plans to use them again next season.
