London College of Fashion graduating talents

It's that time of year when we get a chance to view the work of graduating students and although Graduate Fashion Week officially starts on Sunday June 3, there are several events taking place beforehand, kicking off last Friday with an exhibition at the London College of Fashion.

There can be no doubt that London rocks with design talent. A perusal of works by the BA Hons Product Design & Development for the Fashion Industry grads reveals an eclectic range of fashion accessories and clothing ideas with many promoting ethical and fair trade production. Draper's Award winner, Laura Queening has created a series of drop-dead gorgeous Fair Trade bags combining chunky knits with leather trimmings - the range looks totally desirable and would be credible on the shelves of a good indie boutique as well as the Harvey Nicks and Selfridges of this world. Victoria Thompson is also looking to an eco-future with her modular shoes: the idea is that you can remake, rebuild and reuse all the parts so you don't have to buy new shoes, just re-assemble them.

Takuji Mizutani is in-keeping with this year's trend for travel-friendly shoes and has developed some tasty flexible trainers inspired by his work experience at Adidas, while Rachel Davies has cleverly fused together shoes, scarves and laces into a series of elegant flexible footwear entitled 'i am'. Here the wearer has the creative freedom to adapt the shoe by changing the scarf or laces. A fascination with 50s French designer Jacques Fath led Laurence Dumenil to base her leather bags on Fath's dress designs. It's incredible how Laurence has drawn out the essence of his look and integrated that into stunning leather bags.

Finally, a pat on the back to Ying Sun for her innovative take on household aprons. Ying has sourced delicate fabrics and finishes and features them in her practical, transparent aprons with matching arm-shields. Her funky house-cleaning clobber is fun and with detachable washable cloths at the front, it's properly functional - perfect for Kim and Aggie's next series of 'How Clean Is Your House?'.
