Paul Weller's Fred Perry shirt
At last, Fred Perry has finally decided to create a limited edition shirt with a man truly worthy of the laurel, Mr Paul Weller.
Recently, the British brand which was launched by tennis star Fred Perry in 1952 has solicited polo shirt designs from stylist Judy Blame, designer Peter Jensen and illustrator Alistair McKimm - not one of these geezers is as qualified or suited to creating their own FP polo shirt as Weller.
Weller has been wearing Fred Perry polo shirts since his teens. In June 2006, he wore his own Fred Perry polo design - ivy green with a multicoloured laurel and tipped collars - on stage at a gig at Koko, Camden. There was some discussion about the shirt on Weller's website, with fans trying to work out which style it was, but no-one could find the exact one. Now Fred Perry has announced that "only 200 individually numbered, signature back neck label shirts will be released per size worldwide" and of course buying one isn't easy. First, you must sign-up to be notified when the Fred Perry/Weller online shop opens, then you will receive notification and you may or may not be successful in purchasing (and be warned, cheeky buggers at FP have made the form an automatic opt-in, so make sure you unclick the circles if you don't want to be added to the mailing lists).
The polo shirt is based on a 1962 original and has been made to Mr Weller's "exacting specifications". The price hasn't been announced yet, but judging by recent promotions, expect it to be around £80. Weller's royalties, as you might guess, won't be stuffed in his own pockets: "A significant royalty" from each shirt sold will go to support the 100 Club, where Weller has played several times, the last time at a special one-off gig for fans in February. The 100 Club - www.the100club.co.uk - is a legendary independently-owned music venue in London, known for its support of progressive music.
This is not the first time Weller's natural talent for design has been called upon. Back in 2002 Weller created his own collection of shoes for British footwear company Hudsons and more recently, he customised a Spiewak parka for a charity auction.
Once sold the FP shirts won't ever be made again and we're told that they won't be available anywhere in the world except from this one-item-only online shop. Let's hope the folk at FP HQ sort out the sizes properly - the Blank Canvas Alistair McKimm shirts were, for some weird reason, only available up to a size medium for men and there were none available in women's' sizes at all!

I havn't received it yet but am looking forward to it!
Just been on 'eaby' and there is one for sale on there, size M, starting bid £85, which is how much you had to pay to obtain one. It will be interesting to see if it sells and how much for.
I've thought about selling mine, but I feel I may become very attached to it...
Do not sell it and I hope no-one buys the one on ebay cos I am sure the motivation for this shirt wasn't greed - Weller's money is going to support the 100 Club which really has been a great force supporting new bands etc in the UK and imho is a bang-on cause. The scummy bugger selling it on ebay ain't passing on the profit to the 100 club is he?

I received the shirt on Friday and was very pleased with it.
I definately won't be selling it!
Checked out ebay again today and there's another 2 on there, one of the sellers has a 'buy it now' price tag of £400!!

hi, i got the email from fred perry to say I'd been randomly selected and to wait for a coded email. I registered with them as they told me and waited til Wed the 16th for the email. I still haven't recieved anything from them - is anyone else still waiting for the email?? btw, can't believe there are people putting them on ebay for £400. Robbing gits
That's a shame. From what I understand, FP are emailing all those who didn't get randomly selected with details of which of the "coolest independants in the world" will have some shirts so you get a chance to buy one.. so hopefully you should be mailed very soon.. Why not mail them?
There's a few more on ebay - couple of sellers even link to this fuk news piece! The shirt is a beauty though - two buttons, burgundy and sky blue tipped collar which though 1cm wider than usual looks great. But cos it's been 'one each' rule hopefully not many people would sell theirs..

Since writing this, Fred Perry has had a massive response and tell us 10,000 folk have applied - roughly 12 times as many as shirts available. FP sent an email to all those who registered asking them to submit size specifications and from all of these, the lucky ones, chosen at random, are now being mailed if they have been successful. The chosen ones are to be given access to the store in batches of 100 on different days next week. So, if you registered keep checking your mail and good luck!
We have also been told that: "There will be a small release of the product to a selection of the coolest retailers round the world from next week." Those 9,250 who haven't been selected will be given details of these via email, so even if you don't get invited into the Fred Perry Weller online shop, you could still be in with a chance. Our recommendation to anyone in the UK who has missed the online release is to contact the Fred Perry Concept shop at 12 Newburgh Street W1 (020 77734 4494) or the head office (020 7632 2800).
Apparently, Weller is very pleased with the shirts and is in talks about another possible limited edition design for the same company. What, when or how it will be made available (raffle tickets perhaps?) we'll let you know when we find out.
