Two takes on World Cup Ts
Sons of Sparta vs Guerilla Retail
We've already had a right old commotion about war references on World Cup T-shirts - relax. It's just a game. Now that we've committed football blasphemy we'll cut to the chase - Sons of Sparta and Tom Bottomley's Guerilla Retail are offering two separate takes on World Cup T-shirts.
Based in Birmingham, Sons of Sparta is dedicated to exploring mythology through the medium of T-shirts. Launched at the end of 2004, SOS's initial designs were inspired by Greek mythology, tales of Jason and The Golden Fleece (with the next official Golden Fleece collection due to drop this summer). The World Cup has got SOS designer Pete all patriotic and passionate about St George, so he's created three new designs based on the myth featuring prints and embroidery finishes. These will go on sale from St George's Day (April 23rd) from the website and in some of the label's UK stockists priced £40.
Meanwhile, in London town, fashion journo-turned retail guru, Tom Bottomley, has come up with Goalbusters - his 2006 take on the film Damn Busters. "This World War Two campaign featured the bouncing bomb" Tom told us, "so I replaced the bomb with a bouncing ball and used faces of those who are most likely to get one in the back of the net for us - Beckham Rooney and Lampard." Each shirt costs £19.43 (geddit). You can buy it from Tom's shop, Guerilla Retail at 4 Marlborough Court W1, from Tom's local, The New Inn pub in Ham, Richmond or via email (Tombottomley@btinternet.com, add £3 p+p). Tom is giving 10% from each sale to The Royal Star and Garter, a charity which cares for ex-service men and women.
- Guerilla Retail is open Monday - Saturday 11am - 7pm.
