My PC keeps crashing!!!

I know I'm treating this place like a bloody PC helpline, but I seem to be having loads of problems with my computer at the moment. The latest problem seems to be with my Start bar. I boot the PC up and everything is fine. Then I'll go to start a new application, or maximise something that I've minimsed to the start bar, but when the cursor hovers over the taskbar (or the tray by the clock), it changes from the little arrow to the timer icon and I can't do anything. I can Alt-Tab between open applications, and I can use these fine, but things freeze / crash / hang (or whatever you want to call it) when I go near the start bar. I end up having to Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Restart or Shut Down from within the Task Manager. When I look at the Processes tab here, there doesn't seem to be anything too unusual. Any idea what the problem is? It feels kind of virusy... Thanks |

Silly question, but how do you do that? My computer> right click local disk> properties General tab -> Used space: 107gb Is that what you meant? Is this my problem? Anything I can do other than delete a load of files? Thanks |

do you have anti-virus software running? Check it is up to date and run a full scan. Then come back and let us know if anything is amiss or if any viruses are found and we can take it from there. thanks Iain |

When I open 'My Docs' > 'My Videos' (so that I can delete some big files), the window just closes down before I get the chance to do anything |

Do you regulary delete your temporary internet files and the like? Nope. How do I do that? Go into control panel, click internet options then delete temorary internet files. The disc clean up will have done it for you now, but I'd recommend you do it weekly |

It is now officially f*cked! It's about to get kicked out of the window! It wont boot up properly, and just before the desktop loaded, there was a new message saying that due to significant changes being made to Windows since it was originally activated, it needs to be reactivated in the next 3 days! WTF! I'm getting very close to wiping the bloody thing and starting again, but I don't have a Windows disc, or a boot disc, or anything like that. |

You could try rolling it back a bit, like before it's last windows update. Have you downloaded any dodgy programs recently? |

The activation has to be done with Microsoft to activate the software within 30 days of installation otherwise if stops working. It is the first time I have heard of re-activation being needed, so it may well be a virus. Do you have another PC and an external USB disk box you can use? I would recommend taking the disk out of your PC, attach it to the other PC via the USB disk box then run disk check utilities on it and virus scan it. Get any data off if at all possible as the prognosis is not good. thanks Iain |

I'd also recommend investing in an external hard drive to move all your crap over to. Sound like your pc is nearly full! |
