I used to use the free AVG software with the Windows firewall, but I heard the Windows firewall getting slated many times so I upgraded to the Zone Labs suite.

Thanks.

I agree with Rirawin, common sense is your best weapon.

I use AVG and the XP firewall, mainly because most other firewalls interfere with E-mule.

i do an http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
scan- only works in internet explorer, you get a list back of shit on ur comp,

then use killbox to get rid of the stuff on above list, without have to pay panda a subscription....

plus what came free with the telewest blueyonder, which seems to be up to speed on virus crap too

Internet Explorer should be the first thing it lists under "shit on your computer"

Best Firewall... is to have a Hardware one, built into your router.

I just have Windows firewall enabled and that's it. As an addition. I don't install virus scanners, instead I use online ones like Trend Micro Housecall. Never got a virus in my life. It's all about making sure you don't click stupid links or accept downloads... and avoiding p2p software.

For a basic user, I just recommend AVG and Windows firewall. Again if the user knows not to click dodgy links or open up dodgy attachments, they'll be fine.

Agreed on not using IE. I'd highly recommend something like Firefox or Opera. Both freely available.

BUT I do use the online virus scanners every now and then to be sure. Just because I don't have one installed or I don't click dodgy links, I'm not ignorant to the fact that there's still a possibility I could have one. I also have adaware and spybot search and destroy (I'd recommend to basic users too) installed, but not running in the background. As well as that Microsofts Antispyware tool (which is actually pretty shit, but again I don't have it running in the background). These I run every month or so. 99.9% of the time they don't pick up anything. When they do, it's usually a cookie from some site.

In my view it's down to user error, well the users lack of knowledge which leads them to get a virus or trojan or even spyware problems. Remember, FREE PORN LINK DOWNLOAD.EXE is virtually always guaranteed to be a trojan/spyware/virus.

Windows XP firewall is sound for most users.

I have a hardware one built into router.

I Use NOD32 antivirus...its quality. Minimal overhead and good protection.

i Also use Firefox instead of IE.

You just need the 3 golden rules.

1) Operating System Security Updates
2) Antivirus and most recent signatures
3) Firewall enabled

oh.. and common sense.. don't go running programs like Britney_spears_tit_fuck.exe

hate to dig up an old thread, especially one on this subject as i usually ignore this stuff. never used anti virus stuff and never had a problem.
im on my laptop at the moment next to my pc which has been complete and utterly f##ked.
the virus is called antivirus2008pro.. and it changes every week.

first it popped up on my computer all official looking, said i had lots of virus, then wanted me to pay to remove them, i obviously said no. its taken over my pc... the background is red, with a radioactive sign saying UPDATE YOUR PRIVACY SOFTWARE.. i have about 5 links to different software on desktop... firefox and internet explorer both disabled... the c drive is hidden.... process manager not allowed... regedit not allowed....

anyway i logged into safemode and deleted the antiviruspro2008 folder and any files i was recommended to delete online. boot back up... same shit but IE works... go to google.com it forwards me to other sites.... loads of people have this and loads of people have paid.. they must be making an absolute killing

fuck knows what im gonna do.. system restore i think ... hassle!

try using Firefox instead of IE, install and scan with AVG or Avast! antivirus.
