The Mummy Love Bangle

The Mummy Love Bangle is a very special handmade bracelet which is a teething ring, rattle, baby toy and beautiful present for mum combined. The MLB has been designed by Londoner Jac Power, a trained architect who studied progressive jewellery at City Lit and now works from a studio in west London. She made her first Mummy Love Bangle last year for a friend whose teething baby daughter gnawed on the hollow silver bangle straight away. "This is a present for baby," said Jac. "No way," said Mum. "I want that."

Since then word-of-mouth has brought several more Mummy Love Bangles into the world. Jac Power's focus is on elegant baby-friendly jewellery which can be enjoyed by both parent and child. Babies can pull, throw, bite and play with the Mummy Love Bangle and not destroy it. The teeth marks impressed into the bangle are a unique record of how your child's teeth come through.

So far Jac has made the The Mummy Love Bangle in sterling silver, but she's now experimenting with gold and silver versions. You will not see Mummy Love Bangles on shelves, each is made-to-order and is a genuine labour of love: Jac is keeping a scrapbook album of each mum and child she makes one for. The energy and craftsmanship she channels into each individual creation is incredible and she's been bowled over by the response: "I don't know exactly what inspired me to make the first one," she told us, "but it just felt right".

Jac confesses that she has even had a couple of commissions from people who aren't in the family way yet. "They liked the bangle when they saw one and asked if I'd make one for them even though they aren't having children yet - a wish Mummy Love Bangle - and I think that's fair enough. But I want photos of the children when they eventually arrive. They're part of the Mummy Love family." Although she was too modest to tell us directly, we've discovered that Jac was recently approached by a famous-name jewellery company which she turned down on ethical grounds.
