i started out on some computer software for a month or two before i realised i really needed some proper turntables. software is good to dip your feet in, no where near as fun as having proper decks.

I don't really like CD decks, but you can get cd/mp3 faux vinyl turntables if you got a lot of cash. You can scratch on them without being worried about skipping and feel like vinyl decks.

I'm old school so i'm probably always going to be stubborn and on the vinyl tip. For the new blood cd decks, laptops and mp3s is the way forward.

What type of music you into?

I'm looking to sell my Technics SL1210-MK2 if you're interested. In really good condition, hardly used.

every DMC entrant

vinyl will not die in my lifetime. maybe the next generation, yes, when all the new blood grow up without vinyl.

the death of vinyl will be because of the cheaper availability and better versions of these:

not a fair comparison, you've not been able to scratch with cd decks for a while.
for more 4/4 based dance music where scratchin is less prevalent fair enuff CD decks rule. if you are goin down the road of turntablism and scratchin then there is nothing that can touch vinyl unless you've got a couple of grand to spend on equipment.

ok, turntablism etc fair enough (dont forget yoda). a lot of those guys use things like traktor scratch or serato rather than real records....vinyl wont be produced in 10 years, so just getting into it now seems crazy.

Check this out:

www.abletonlivedj.com

Specifically http://abletonlivedj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2903

I started mixing on turntables without pitch adjust in 92, then switched to crappy Soundlab beltdrives, then finally Technics 1210s, Pioneer CDJ 800s, and now I'm on Ableton.
Obviously vinyl is the best (and I sill think all "DJs" should learn to mix vinyl before using CDJs or software), but the stuff you can do with Ableton is immense!

Most importantly, nobody makes it as a "DJ" anymore simply on the back of their mixing, because let's face it, anybody can pick up Traktor or even Pioneer CDJs and leanr to mix in 3 seconds. You need to either create your own tunes or do something innovative.
Ableton is good because it forces you to be inventive.
You have to prep your tracks, Ableton then takes care of the timekeeping leaving the "DJ" free to be creative, remix live and do something completely new.

The reason I put "DJ" in inverted commas is that it's such an overused term. As in "I just bought Pioneeer CDJs, now I'm a DJ". No you're not. Go and buy some records and learn how to mix!!!

OK, rant over Smiling

Two of my flat mates are DJ's, and they bought some CDJ's. One of them used to use vinyl, but he's all over cdj's now as most clubs have them, and he doesn't have to spend hundreds on records (he's a student as well).

I agree with what jackstraxx said. Mixing doesn't take long to learn (i taught myself over a short period of time), it's all about producing your own tracks. You don't necessary need to do it yourself, you can hire engineers to create them for you with your direction.

I'm going to get myself a pair of cdj's over summer because i enjoy it, and my flat mates are moving out next year so they'll take the equipment.

I agree with the affordability side of it.
I just find it frustrating that some people (like myself) spend years learning how to beatmix, keymix with vinyl, only for young upstarts to come along with their laptops and say "I'm a DJ" Smiling

I just think it's important to learn how to mix first and actually appreciate what is involved. I.e. not just beatmixing, but how to structure mixes, layer tracks etc.

Then you can take it to the next level using Ableton, Traktor or whatever.

It's a dying art Smiling
