Does anyone know of a legit place to order these now? They were released in the states last week I believe, so some company must ship them over here now?
Geeky Gadgets has received a tip on how much the Apple iPad will retail for when it goes on sale in the UK. The base 16GB WiFi iPad will be available for £389, the 32GB WiFi model will be available for £439 and the 64GB WiFi model will be available for £489.

is 16Gb the total storage it's got, thats not much for a PC, can you extra memory in it ?
yeah, the base model. it isnt really comparable to a PC though, at the moment its pretty much a big ipod touch, but some of the apps are a lot better than what you can do on a smaller screen. i would have thought even better apps will start to be released before it is out in the UK. nobody seems to know what its exactly for yet, but it isnt meant to replace a PC or laptop - you need to hook it up to one via itunes to get any files on to it for a start...
Having to have to use Itunes will put loads of people off, and TBH it's not making it look like a serious business machine, more a big toy. I wouldn't be happy with anything that has limited storage, what do you do if you want to take a backup, bring it back to the office and plug it into Itunes to transfer everything to your desktop ?
it is a big toy though. they clearly arent going after the business market. if anyone wants a portable computer with a big hardrive, apple would rather they buy a macbook pro.
i like them, but they are what they are - ie NOT a fully fledged computer
Its not a PC its a media device / web browser that has to be synced off another Mac / PC.
Thats what the people want. Its a consumer product.
Anyone who works in IT knows this device is a godsend in terms of setting up a picture media viewer / web browser for someone who is illiterate.
The appstore is a wonderful invention, easy to buy, install, update and transfer programs / media. Itunes is a bit bloaty, but it doesn't really matter.
Its clean and simple as a consumer device should be.
Its not what it was hyped up to be (some sort of touch screen macbook) so that is always going to sting the fanboy.
It's an aspirational and luxury device, I think a lot of people have the Apple gadget lust and feel compelled to get one and are furious that Apple hasn't delivered a device that they must have.
From the time I have been allowed to spend on the thing it's really good.
The guy used to work for apple so knows more about it than I do and can't stop singing it's praises.
Basically seems like the perfect thing for casual computer use, browsing, sending emails, reading, viewing photos watching movies, playing games. All that malarky.
Obviously does not work as anything more work based, maybe it's good as a tablet, don't really know.
I think it's well worth it, it's just really fun to use, not as cumbersome as you might think and really doesn't come across as a large I pod.

I do think like you it's for casual use and very light work, unless your job is all about communication via email and so on. I think they'll be a lot of apps designed for it and not the iPhone that will make it a lot more productive. I don't really need one as I have a MacBook Pro but I'm very tempted to go for it. I don't always want to lug around my notebook when I can easily slip this in my bag especially if all you want to do is read a book or surf the net in the sun. Hmm what to do....? Are you going to bite the bullet and grab one?

^Yep, I would have loved for a Wacom digitiser but that would skyrocked the costs, its Ok for quick sketching ideas but I can't see myself rendering a full CG painting on an Ipad.
^ S'pose I can see that but there's always undo or you could wear The North Face e-Tip gloves Also I think that does depend on the complexity and detail of the CG painting.
For quick sketches say for an interior designer to help convey their ideas and thoughts. Going through a swatch of colours and browsing through photo's and perhaps researching on the net, taking measurements, collating all that data and more in an organic way through touch and taking back that information to the office to work on will I think be brilliant. And on the way there you're reading a book and the way back you're catching up on the lastest episode of Dexter.
Why would you need a notebook to do all that, they're heavier and more cumbersome. The iPad maybe underpowered for a lot of things and there may not be an app for it yet but I think it can be a useful tool especially in later incarnations.
Well I managed to do some quick sketches for some concept art, looked a bit clunky but I feel simply because I need to adjust to the lack of sensitivity and pressure. I'm not entirely sure if it replace my sketchbook for doodling though but then the main focus for me is simply a decent reader and something to watch videos too on the move.

I think the lack of sensitivity could be be purposeful in so much that for general use it has to be. It also has to far more robust compared to a Wacom tablet that lives on a desk. Imagine the abuse most will give it. But it would be nice if you could change the settings for sensitivity yourself or maybe the app does so automatically allowing fine tuning within the app itself then changing back to general use once you quit the app.
Another consideration is the price, those Wacom jobs are expensive for a reason, hey maybe in a future revision this will happen.
Plus the use of touch is a huge paradigm shift for most that they will all have to get use to communicating with their devices without a mouse or a keyboard which if you think about it is quite archaic. We can be far more intricate and detailed with use of our fingers plus we can be able to operate far more freely and productively with touch, all that is a while away yet
