Are there any particular requirements of the software for the job you're doing ? If not there are loads of free graphics programs about.

Plenty of tutorials on the web and youtube to give you ideas on techniques. For example.....http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/design/photoshop-tutorials-poster-design/ Just mess about with stuff and you'll get the hang of it. If I get stuck just googling your problem usually helps..

The death of my business, or the start depending on whether the client wants cheap, or done well.

just need to do cool looking text (spent a day downloading fonts), and be able to import images easily. and move everything about easily. i did try xara x, which was so simple to use, but sometimes it would look different on the print out compared to what was on the screen.. i'll try this indesign and check out the tutorials on vandelaydesign.com (just found some awesome ones on smashingmagazine.com as well).

I'd try Gimp, it's free and fairly easy to use.

I don't think you can get all the cool plugins for the Windows version but it's cool for a free program.

Corel Draw has been around for years now and keeps getting better. Some prefer Photoshop but Corel Is by far the best layout programmme for flyers and other 2d graphics I swear by it. I have been using it for the last seven years it is even great for architectural presnetations. Corel Draw package comes standard with Corel photo paint which works just as well as Photoshop for editing pics. File formats for Corel includes jpg, bmp, and pdf to name a few.

Problem is everyone uses Photoshop the Adobe Suite is standard. Saying Corel is better for layout isn't true in my opinion, I find it less intuitive to use.
