you continue to pay your line rental to BT, but nothing else, and just use Tiscali's phone service

Try searching http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php and look at the LLU operator presence. Those are the companies with there own kit in your local exchange and can offer you line rental and a broadband deal (although not all companies do both).

Ive heard bad things about tiscali and talk talk with regards to customer service / quality of service. Be unlimited and Newnet are probably the best although sky are supposed to be ok. I think they have a good deal on at the minute.

hope this helps

you don't have to pay BT anything do you? as long as you have a BT line installed...

Tiscali broadband is terrible. They use the most incompatible modem ever and their broadband does not support mac computers. I really wouldn't recommend going down that route, even if its cheap, their helplines are no help at all and their speeds, and connection drop out rates are pathetic.

Personal experience. Go for Virgin.

I was under the impression that if you didn't continue to pay BT line rental then they would cut you off, making the line unusable

the phone line is physically installed whether you pay or not. BT or tiscali (or whoever) will connect it to their phone systems if you pay them.

anyhow, if tiscalli are crap, can someone recommend a combined line rental/phone/broadband package in a similar price range?

If the provider has there own equipment in the local exchange (an LLU provider) like tiscali or sky etc. then you dont have to pay line rental to BT.

However you will have to pay BT for the initial line activation if your moving into a new house and they also force you into a 12 months line rental with this. Theres no way i know of getting out of this that I know of. But after this period you can choose a different company to pay your line rental and broadband with thus cleansing yourself of BT.

who you go with depends on where you live also and wether the company your thinking of going with has there own kit (LLU presence) in your local exchange.

At the min for that money sky is best. if you search ttp://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php and sky have an LLU presence id go with them for your line rental & broadband.. i think they do some deal also for tv as well if your interested.

Don't go anywhere near Orange under any circumstance. Disgraceful customer service.
