awful news puts mine in to perspective. HMRC have just taken 6K in tax in one go as the gf was on a BR code by mistake for a few months - unable to pay bills in full and hols in 4 weeks unlikely - prob lose flight money. Didn't think they are supposed to do this sort of thing as a new code of 60T was issued this month. managed to get my iPhone on it's way from a friendly Sicilian at an airport |

worst: best man/mate has just received the results of an MRI which shows he has liver cancer. Close mate of mine was diagnosed with that at a young age (late 20s) and had about one 3rd of her liver removed, will allways be a shadow over her and means check ups every 6 months BUT from the state she was in to what shes like now is amazing, dont lose hope. |

Got off the phone to him a little while ago and he's got two biopsies in the next couple of days to confirm the diagnosis and decide on the treatment. Just hoping the original MRI was mistaken. |

Got off the phone to him a little while ago and he's got two biopsies in the next couple of days to confirm the diagnosis and decide on the treatment. Just hoping the original MRI was mistaken. How this affects your friend will depend on the staging of the cancer (how far it has spread) and its grade (how aggressive it is), which will be determined by the biopsies. Being at this stage of treatment is very hard because you don't know what is going happen: you could just need to whip out the affected bit, or chemo or whatever might be required. Once the results are in and he knows where he stands he'll feel a lot better because a degree of certainty has been restored. The thing about cancer treatment in general is, having been diagnosed somehow you get assigned a cancer centre based on where you live, ie there's a lot of chance involved. It might be the case that you end up being treated at a really boss place, but there is a lot of regional variation in quality of cancer care. Knowing nothing about your mate's case it's hard to speculate, but there's no harm, and potentially a lot of benefit, in getting a referral for a second opinion to another (ideally better if possible...but which are the better hospitals? generally bigger is better I guess) cancer centre, for example in London I'd recommend UCH or Royal Marsden (don't really know for liver cancer though). Of course this is easier said than done, consultants can be quite intimidating and won't offer a 2nd opinion up front, it requires balls to ask for one. Your mate could have the most open and shut easy peasy liver cancer ever and a 2nd opinion could be obviously a waste of time. On the other hand if there's any ambiguity about the best treatment it could be the best decision he ever made. There's not much one can personally do to affect your cancer treatment positively, but playing the health system effectively can make all the difference.
