Computer Help Thread

I'm a member of a couple of computer forums and the people are useless, they never help with anything. Thought it might be a good idea to start. a general computer help thread. If we've already got one please delete this thread.

I'm having a problem with Outlook Express (I've lost many messages).

On Outlook Express it prompted me to compact existing messages (I've done this before). The next time the PC loaded (it had frozen and I had to restart) I went into OE and found only some emails there. My whole Sent Items folder is empty. When I go to the Store Folder however the files seem to be there okay.

I've tried copying my Store Folder to another location and using that but it still doesn't show my emails. Also I've downloaded OE-Mail Recovery and tried to extract emails from the files to no avail.

Message of the story kids - backup any important shit often.

We have a laptop from that line (a 14 incher). It's got great build quality but its wifi chip was a bit pathetic so I had to upgrade it to get decent reception.

Bear in mind that is definitely overkill for "downloading films, word processing, internet browsing." That laptop has a Blu-ray drive (for HD movies despite it doesnt have an HD screen?), dedicated graphics card (for games), 6Gb of memory (more than 4 is probably unnecessary) which all drive the price up.

You shouldn't need to spend more than £350 for a laptop that can easily handle browsing and the like.

on pictures/images on the internet is there a way to make them any bigger.
sometimes when i've clicked open image in new tab i can delete the size 800x600 and change it to 1600x1200 and it goes bigger.
does this only work on certain ones or am i not doing something right on the code or whatever its called?

yeah turn off the fan mate, see what happens.

are you actually fucking retarded? how on earth are you employed?

seriously, you must fucking know the consequences of turning off your fan surely?!

I'm seriously thinking you must be trolling or something

ps; let me guess, HP laptop?

edit; sorry I got a little carried away, the only way to turn your fan off is to unplug it from the inside of your laptop, if youre really bothered about the fan its probably working hard as your CPU is overheating, it can do this by being covered in dust or certain programs that youre running, whats your computer spec? if you google search core temperature programs you'll be able to see why your fan is constantly on because youre probably running too many programs or certain ones which your computer spec can't handle. If all else fails, if its in warranty, take it back to be looked at and they will replace the psu. Guess that your laptop isnt very new though if its doing that, usually circa 2010 laptops last 3 years before they shit up if used everyday and not turned off.

Looking for a programme that'll read a scanned document with numbers/letters on it and convert it into an excel document.

Any ideas? Don't mind spending a couple of hundred quid as it's gonna be used on a regular basis.

I don't know if you're aware but the software for reading scanned documents is called OCR (Optical Character Recognition).

Googling OCR convert Excel seems to bring up several options on a quick look.

soo its getting to the point where I'm going to buy a new laptop, currently using an acer but its not really any good.

willing to spend around ~1500

been looking at the macbook pro even though its nearing its product cycle, but been looking at alienware laptops, specs seem pretty insane and dick over the macbooks, for alot cheaper too. but they any good? anyone own one? why do so many people buy the macbook pro even though stats wise/price wise it doesnt seem as good?

^ I used a windows 7 samsung laptop the other week, first time using windows 7, it was hell. Literally couldn't believe how bad it was.

So I guess one of the reasons so many people buy MacBooks instead of better spec'd and priced acers and alienwares is because they don't run windows 7.

a lot of the time people buy a macbook and dont have to worry about it for at least 3/4 years. had my pro for almost 3 years now and not once has it let me down (well apart from when i dropped it and had to replace the hd Oops ).
cant vouch for the reliability of expensive laptops though, but i've never used a laptop that's as nice to use as a macbook. and then of course theres the 'what are you using it for' argument too.

Stats wise macbooks match up much better than people think. The MPBs have brilliant screens/keyboards/trackpads.

Having not looked at windows-based PCs for ages, would be grateful of some advise in buying a couple of desktops for work.

Got £500-550 per PC to spend, and they'll be used mainly for doing standard MS Office-based work, incl a fair bit of heavy Excel use.

At least one of the machines will be based on reception, so it looking decent would be a bonus. Decent after-sales support would also be useful.

Was looking at a HP Omni 120, Intel Dual Core, 2.7GHz, 4GB RAM, 1TB with 20 Inch Screen (http://www.johnlewis.com/231577566/Product.aspx) for £549

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated

Thanks

The laptop linked does have a HD screen.
