Computer Help Thread

I'm a member of a couple of computer forums and the people are useless, they never help with anything. Thought it might be a good idea to start. a general computer help thread. If we've already got one please delete this thread.

I'm having a problem with Outlook Express (I've lost many messages).

On Outlook Express it prompted me to compact existing messages (I've done this before). The next time the PC loaded (it had frozen and I had to restart) I went into OE and found only some emails there. My whole Sent Items folder is empty. When I go to the Store Folder however the files seem to be there okay.

I've tried copying my Store Folder to another location and using that but it still doesn't show my emails. Also I've downloaded OE-Mail Recovery and tried to extract emails from the files to no avail.

Message of the story kids - backup any important shit often.

RE: Nexus 7

I got one the other day, it's very nice. Well worth the price! It's still Android underneath everything though, despite trying to hide it with their fancy Holo theme, settings crashing etc. It really sets the standard for low-price tablets.

I have just noticed that some websites are not loading on any of the computers/tablets/iphones at home. I have tried firefox, IE, chrome etc but not working...

Anyone know what might be causing this please?

Internet provider is Virgin Media if that helps.

Might be a DNS issue, in which case you can switch to using those provided by Google or OpenDNS.

Find out the IP address of some of the websites that aren't loading, and type the IP address directly into the browser address bar instead of the actual address. If the website loads then it's a DNS issue.

Or maybe I'd be better off playing the ipad through the tv?

Yeah its really great. I just like the form factor, the selection of apps is still poor and I miss the iPad selection of music apps.

Can anyone recommend 1 for around the £300 mark? All I use it for is Word, downloading films, music etc n playing football manager

Been looking at the Argos and tesco eBay stores for refurbs, and there seems some decent ones for around £250 but I'm
Not sure

I'd go for the Toshiba, Asus can be a bit flaky.

You should be able to get an HP laptop for (just) under 300

When I put a link in an e-mail (outlook) it doesn't recognize it as a link so I end up having to hyperlink and just put the same text in "text to display" and "address". Hitting return after the link does nothing (it does work in Plain Text mode). Must be a setting somewhere that I can't see. Help please

My old dear had similar problems on her PC recently - this worked...

Windows Vista

To restore links in email programs using Windows Vista:

Open the Windows menu.
Type "default programs" (not including the quotation marks) under Start Search.
Click Default Programs under Programs.
Now click Set your default programs.
Highlight Internet Explorer under Programs.
Click Set this program as default.
Now click OK.
Close the default programs window.
Of course, you can now choose a different browser from the same Programs list and use Set this program as default to make it your default.

Windows 98/2000/XP

To make web pages open again when you click links in emails using Windows XP and earlier:

Make sure neither Outlook Express nor Internet Explorer are open.
Select Control Panel from the Start menu.
Click Internet Options.
If you do not see Internet Options right away, click Network and Internet Connections before.
Go to the Programs tab.
Make sure Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser is checked.
Click OK.
Close Internet Explorer.
Re-open Internet Explorer.
Click Yes when asked Internet Explorer asks "Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?"
If Internet Explorer does not ask:
Close Internet Explorer
Select My Computer from the Start menu.
Choose Tools | Folder Options... from the menu.
Go to the File Types tab.
Highlight (NONE) URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol.
Click Advanced.
Highlight open.
Click Remove.
Click Yes.
Click OK.
Now click Close.
Start Internet Explorer.
If you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, start it and make sure it is the new default.

I don't think this works mate. I'm talking about when I write an e-mail. If I receive an e-mail with links it's not a problem. It's when I paste a link into an e-mail I'm typing it just sit's there as un-clickable text.

Without power adapter (doesn't need it for 2.5")

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TRIXES-SATA-Adapter-Cable-Hard/dp/B007HMIORK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347969281&sr=8-2

or with power adapter

or if you want cheaper but a bit of a wait
