I haven't got much experience of getting stuff sent over from abroad and was after a bit of help regarding customs fees.

I'm getting a watch sent over from an Ebay seller - he is sending UPS insured delivery. How does he need to mark the parcel down to avoid any fees?

Thanks

Cheers Soultimate, so no chance of escaping it.

unless the value is marked down below 20 pounds and uninsured, you might be lucky.
as for "marked as gift", below 35 pounds, there is a high chance of avoiding tax

I received a letter from Customs Clearance Ltd stating that I need to pay £20.20 before they'll release my package.

The thing is I received the goods the day before the letter arrived, am I still required to pay?

for 20 quid they probably won't bother unless they're wankers.

Seems like some companies use them as customs brokers - http://www.avforums.com/forums/general-chat/1559731-customs-clearance-limited.html

What's the maximum value you're allowed to get through before they tax it now? I always thought it was like £40, but apparently it has been increased.

Used to be £18, it's only £15 now, for gifts, £40.

Was looking to buy something from the US that was made in the UK (works out much cheaper even with shipping factored in)- asked about lowering the declared value so I wouldn't be stung by customs and got a reply saying that it's likely that I wouldn't have to pay import duties or the like as I'm ordering an item that was made in the some country as it was being delivered to (if that makes sense); any ideas if this is true?

A DJ friend who currently resides in Canada has bought me an iPod touch & copied his iTunes onto it for me.

What's the best shipping company to use in order to avoid customs fees?

Also are there any other tricks I can try? I'm thinking the first obvious thing to do would be to not send it in the original packaging & to declare it as 'gift' on the delivery form? Should I also ask him to mark the value down even though an iPod is clearly not worth less than a dollar if they open it..? Or is the whole point of declaring the value lower so that they hopefully won't bother opening it?

As you say, mark it as a gift, don't include packaging and put a birthday card in with it/wrapping paper

Thanks Cool Should I tell him to declare the real value on the package?
