Who's feeling it?

I started commuting by bike about 3 months ago and I'm loving it - free, green, wicked exercise, quicker than a bus and good fun too. Totally converted.

I want to get a new bike at some point, anyone get any tips? Any fans of single-speeds?

Im not familiar with this thread, and i don't know that much about brands. I need some advice, as I'm looking to buy a bike mainly for commuting and pleasure. At the same time, I'd like to save money down the line and stay healthy. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a Raleigh 3 speed equip with a chain guard (not fully enclosed). its great for country cycles and i love it but i think it would struggle on a commute. Its going to be about 32miles per week from my flat to Holborn. With that in mind, Im thinking of getting a road bike. What are my options? Is there anywhere that's worth checking out in London where I might be able to get a decent second hand one at a good price. Otherwise, Im prepared to buy a new one (but i must say, I can't justify spending that much on a bike even though I really enjoy cycling. In this case, my budgets 100-300. Possibly more depending on what's about.

Cheers Smiling

I think you can get a decent enough Viking around 250, best thing I've seen around that price range.

get on the cycle to work scheme (save 40%) and then you can get something around the £500 mark. if youre in holborn im guessing your commute is pretty flat.. means you could get an alright fixed gear or singlespeed for that kind of money. charge plug/specialised langster

If you manage to get on the Cycle 2 Work then there are some good road bikes around the 300/400 mark...Raleigh Airlite 100 is a good spec for the price. Also Decathlon's own brand "b twin" has an entry level road bike for around 300 that won best budget bike in quite a few road cycling magazines recently. Most important thing is to get measured and get the right size for you.

@Foxtrot, Fuji Track Classic is another option if your budget remains the same.

Did the Donald Hirsch route from London to Paris over 4 days and Got Eurostar back on new built up S3 with a backpack (think I should have got panniers in hindsight although it pains me to ruin the esthetic of a bike with touring kit)... Also was wincing on numerous occasions at some of the surfaces as they're definitely not suited to road bikes, dreading looking at some of the chips.
http://www.donaldhirsch.com/dieppeparis.html

Picturesque rolling farms with Hay rolls, first 45 miles from dieppe to forges les yeux is on the soon to be finished full route from dieppe all the way in to paris.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avenue_Verte
Should have been completed but despite that was completely safe and only a few bits on A roads on cycle lanes.

Had an iffy day 3 with nearly 12 hrs in the bike and a 30 mile stretch through rolling hills and villages with no shop / food stop at all. (amazes me how businesses close for the whole of august in france, fuck knows how that country became a big empire as nothing is open!) All in brutal 35+ degree heat. sunstroke, balance problems and lost the ability to string a sentence together after that.

I fancied myself a bit from riding track bikes on long journeys but was struggling although drinking the night before each days riding wasn't ideal preparaton.

Dont do camping so stayed in hotels en route and in Versailles then hotwired a hotel in Paris.

Would defo recommend it although wouldn't do it strictly road on an expensive carbon frame next time.

I have a friend in cat 3 racing who used to take stuff as a junior athlete, but the difference is that you had a club / team doctor who could monitor what you were taking. It's expensive now as the gap between testers and takers is closing all the time, he does altitude training and sleeps with it twice a week. He's nearly 40 now so I do wonder what the point of it all is when he's never gonna go pro.

did you follow route 21 out of london? that was the worst bit of the journey for us. First day was killer as well, rolling hills for 85 miles and then got a late ferry arriving at our hotel in dieppe at 5am. Then had 1 more stop at gournay en bray before paris. Second day was dead flat Cool

Bealach na ba! Rode it on the jubilee weekend. Absolute monster of a climb, incredible views. Some good 3-4k sections at over 15%.

Did you do the other side from applecross too? The last few k are a bitch.

Had the 2nd fastest descent on strava til a couple of weeks ago.
