Who's feeling it?

I started commuting by bike about 3 months ago and I'm loving it - free, green, wicked exercise, quicker than a bus and good fun too. Totally converted.

I want to get a new bike at some point, anyone get any tips? Any fans of single-speeds?

We looped round from Applecross towards Loch Torridon and round to the bottom of the climb that way, then up and over. Just checked my Strava and it was my 11th or 12th ever time on a road bike so predictably slow... but really pleased with my ascent time.

Here's the ride: http://app.strava.com/rides/18685969

The wind was brutal on the descent too, nearly got shoved off the road at speed a couple of times.

Did you eat at the Applecross Inn?

Truvativ Descendant mountain bike crankset seem ok. weight is no issue, nor are looks. just want something strong.

Nah, I was riding the road round anticlockwise from shieldaig with the wife and inlaws in the car doing a bit of sightseeing. Did it from applecross then turned round an rode it the other way too.

Want to fit some new pedals and grab some shoes:
Fancy these in red, any good? http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=13079

Also, what shoes to get. Budget around £100

Never tried other pedals so can't comment on what is good and what isn't. My SPD-SLs are fine but there are tons of other choice. Speedplays look nice, Look, a few others maybe.

i have look keos and get on well with them, never tried any other pedals though. Only complaint is the cleats get fucked up pretty quick so i would avoid walking in them whenever possible

What do people take out with them when they're on a ride?

Food? Tubes? Pump? Tools? etc

I just take food drink and the tools required to fix a puncture/ replace innertube. Can generally fit it in the back of my jersey so no need for a bag

I have a saddle bag with a spare tube, puncture repair kit (tyre levers) and a multi tool. Have a pump on the frame and water bottle and that's about it unless it's a long one

Learnt the hard way to take a bit of old tyre too in case you get a tear & the new inner tube pokes through.

Normally have a bar / gel for every 30-45 mins ill be riding in my left jersey pocket; pump, innertube & gas canister with a rubber band round them + packable waterproof if needed in my middle; a pouch with my debit card, driving license, house keys, cash, mobile, bit of tyre and mini levers in my right. Plus a mini tool if I'm going far from home by myself / been working on my bike the night before.

Standard really; SiS drink and sometimes a bar if over 4 hours. Tube, repair kit, pump, tools, phone (strava), cash, bank card. All fits in the back of a jersey.

Upped my repair kit game a year ago after a halfords one didn't have any glue in the tube 10 miles from home.

Good call on the tyre segment, had to improvise with 5 plasters on the inside of a tyre once.

CO2 gas and a spare tube is a life saver
