I've got a copy of Ableton already, but would rather use a mixer or something to start with.

Anything really mate, thats the beauty of having the freedom of being able to burn cd´s. Just getting properly back into it now as ive settled into a new place and will have internet within a week or so.

Favourite stuff is electro, indie electro, garage, drum and bass, some minimal stuff, anything really tho man, if its good its good regardless of genre, im super open (no homo).

Would it be any good, or is there anything anyone could recommend for less than £150 that would be better, but still good for a complete beginner?

Any advice on a entry level mixer, just to learn the basics on?

Well you can get midi conroller from 50 quid upwards which are suitable for traktor/ableton. I have a pretty basic m-audio. However if you plan on using cds/vinyl at some stage you will need a proper mixer = more expensive.

I know this echoes a lot of other posts in this thread and is a bit cliche, but I want to get into dj'ing-as a hobby.

Last night me and a friend ended up DJ'ing the back room of a local rock club on CDJ's and had a lot of fun doing it, went down really well, started with Rock/Metal/Nu Metal to keep the owner happy, then soon took it to 90's Hip Hop, classic rap tracks, punk, sceney-emo shit for the ladies and 30mins of Dubstep which went down great! Obviously, we was just using the cross fader to go from track to track, there was no beat matching or anything like that as we were both 100% novices so the dubstep section flowed quite crudely..but worked for a rock club.

So now I've had a taste, I want to actually learn so I'm thinking of investing in some cheap equipment. What do you recommend that's cheap enough as hobby kit, but will suffice if I end up playing a few house parties?

you need to get to know everyone in that particular scene. go to a lot of clubs and make friends with the people running the nights. they will either ask you, someone else will ask you to fill in at their night or you can put on your own night with mates and get some of these other DJs to guest. it does take a lot of time and effort as you are basically building a new social circle.

i guess you could give out CDs to bar/club managers or promoters, but you are just another anonymous face. i've never done this, cos i know it wouldnt get me anywhere. it really is about who you know.

unless you are playing on a massive system, its pretty easy. you'll have monitors and whatnot most places.

Because i like deadmau5 as well and the simple logo. Im playing at air in brum in november in the nitrogen room. Techno and minimal house. I normally play like richie hawtin / magda of stuff. That mix was with my mate though so its half his input. Also like dirty techno at about 132-134.

As for djing in a club, make sure they have good monitors and if they dont always mix with the headphones on. Nothing more to day apart from the fact its a lot louder then normal

yeh and the whole dj world is literally about who you know like guffer said. Mixtapes help as well. Either that or ure just need to be unbelieveably good (technically). Ive never been that bothered about amazing technical mixes providing the tunes are insane

Guffer is spot on mate, its all about getting to know people in the scene and building a new social circle. I can't DJ, but I could get a slot at quite a few half decent nights if I told my mates I could!

Guffer is totally spot on. Without wishing to name drop I worked in this industry for years and success is based on two things. Having a style that's totally different and makes people sit up. But that's nothing without connections. Find out who the key promoters are where you live and make it your life's mission to become their best friends. I have seen moderately talenedted DJs who are brilliant kiss-asses make fortunes and conversely really talented people who are bad at putting themselves forward go nowhere.

Once you have 1-2 years under your belt get an agent. I know people who cannot string two words together who can make £500-£2000 a week but you have to keep pluggin away.

The real money these days is in becoming a producer and developing a style that people want to get a slice of...

Good Luck
