For a guy I think they mean "looking like James Bond having dinner in a posh restaurant with an evil villain"

i think its not quite black tie but more very smart - i would definitely wear a suit and tie, the first impression is all that counts at these things as after a couple of hours you'll be hammered with a tie around your head swinging from the chandeliers

elegant is simple but smart, maybe a suit, smart polo with all buttons done or a long sleeve light roundneck tee/knit.

it always starts elegant but a few lines later im sure everyone will loosen up and grope each other so dont wear any light colours because it will have grubby hands all over it, and if that doesnt happen i would see the xmas party as a failure

Are you advocating a polo with a suit?

insanity! May as well wear black trainers instead of shoes... Roll Eyes

a smart knitted polo all buttons done up under a suit, or a plain roundneck under the suit, you dont HAVE to wear a shirt because its seen as the norm

Homer, wear is it being held? If it's in some fancy country house or hotel then it's a tux job - if they're treating you all to Maccy D's then you may get away with going dressed like El Hoolio says.

i suppose elegant is taken on board differently for every reader on here, personally you shouldnt have to ask what to wear but do your own take on it, its not asking for denims and trainers and its not asking for penguin tuxedos so go from there, its somewhere in the middle in whatever taste of clothes you have

i really cant see why all you young people think its worse than cross dressing to just whack on a suit, shirt and a tie for a big doo
its a lovely feeling to dress up and crumpet love to see a man who usually dresses casually wearing a smart suit, they see you in a different light and it sends them well bandy. (especially after a few drinks)
i even went thru a stage a few years back wear i wore a suit and tie every time i went out somewhere nice, nicked untold as well whilst doing so.
