For anything work related... a thread to answer questions about employment.

- Seek advice and ask about work or post information about potential job opportunities that you think might be of interest to other Fukers.
- For work dilemmas and queries or just general chatter.

There's always a great deal of talk spread across threads regarding employment and work - (Universities, Teaching English).
What with many of you being workers: use your knowledge to field those questions and help each other out.

Tricky one that, I was in a similar situation a little while back. Might be worth looking at the particulars of the contract, mine said that I was expected to pull out of any other interviews/applications for other places once I had accepted this. That said, there's no real way they can enforce it. At worst they'll just be pretty disappointed when you tell them that you tell them you're not actually accepting it. Might be worth ringing them and asking for extra time to make your decision. If you don't want to I'd just accept it then pull out when you get something better.

Congrats too, btw. What kinda fields/who with?

there is no way someone would take anyone to court for not starting, doesn't matter if you earn 50 or 150k. Even if there was specific inserts in the contract it's highly unlikely they would stand up in UK court. the same regs that state you can work for anyone would protect you. You would have no personal liability. Might be different if you are a Ltd Contractor, and you caused loss of earnings, you might get threatened to go court (but you wouldn't), but it wouldn't stand.

Oh believe me, they would. 'Unlikely to stand up in UK court'? Come on, employment & contract law aren't fictions: they have proper legal meaning. It's not uncommon, for example, for contracts for directors or high level management to include exclusion clauses in their respective industry, i.e., you choose to leave you're excluded from practicing in your industry for a set period of time; if there's a specified notice period, that's usually guaranteed by the signatory. And you would have personal liability depending on what the contract is, for example, directors with equity (and have shareholders agreement) have a fiduciary duty to ensure the company isn't financially compromised, failing that, they could literally be sued for unlimited liability.

Once you sign a contract you've entered into an agreement that must be kept, failing that, you operate penalty clauses; but the simple fact of the matter is that for low level employees it's completely inconsequential, so even though the violated party can pursue recompense if they want (whatever is outlined in the contract_, they'd rarely choose to do that.

Never mind the law or the likelihood (or not) of being subject to prosecution, I would suggest that leaving a company in the lurch at short notice having previously signed a contract with them is not the best start to one's graduate career.

Sign your offer. Continue interviewing elsewhere. If you land another offer, renege on the previous one. HR will be annoyed but they've got better things to do than to chase up a grad reneging on them, especially if it's a big firm.

Work is giving one person the opportunity to go to sxsw and report back on all the conferences. Need to pitch an idea for a way to share the information while i'm there and when I'm back.

Beyond pinterest and snip.it, are there any more interesting ways to share and aggregate information? Needs to be able to be shared both internally but PR-able to shown externally.

PM me. I don't develop myself but work with developers who are always looking for freelance work.

He is talking about emailing and leaving before even starting the job. It's very job specific but on the whole nothing would come of it...

I have been invited for an interview for a graduate scheme in a few weeks, since applying I have update my CV/added more. Is it worth asking if they would like to see this revised CV? Its through a external recruitment agency, not to sure if this is a good idea or just leave it and wait for the interview.

Firms sometimes ask for it and your interview may well involve talking about items on your CV, so I don't see the harm in offering it to them.
