For anything work related... a thread to answer questions about employment.

- Seek advice and ask about work or post information about potential job opportunities that you think might be of interest to other Fukers.
- For work dilemmas and queries or just general chatter.

There's always a great deal of talk spread across threads regarding employment and work - (Universities, Teaching English).
What with many of you being workers: use your knowledge to field those questions and help each other out.

Anyone work in IT? I am trying to help my little brother out doing a application for a IT apprenticeship. I have a rough idea for helping him with all the questions but was hoping for some added extra

He has just completed a mickey mouse 6 month one where he secured quite a few MTA qualifications? This one is 2 years and you end up specialising in either tech support, development or network and communications so he really wants to get on it.

What personal strengths are needed? Was thinking along the lines of interpersonal, time/priority management, communication, hard working, results driven? Any other obvious ones?

Also what personal skills would you like to improve? Best way to answer that?

What have you done to pro actively develop yourself in IT? Well apart from using computers and doing well at his current IT apprenticeship what can he put here that sounds good.

What can you being to the role that will make a difference to the company?

Thanks

Will just have to see tomorrow, been honest about a interview the other month and the unprofessional way it was handled by my manager has meant I have matched his unprofessionalism and pulled the sickie. Was successful with one of the interviews but they have contacted him for the reference before I got chance to talk to him.

So I'm going to be doing a bit of freelance work for a couple of months, probably not more than 2-3 days a week, and I'm wondering what I have to do in terms of tax and declaring my earnings, etc. I honestly have no clue what steps I'm supposed to take here. Obviously when you work full-time for a company, you just fill out the P46, job done. What do I do when it's just me going in and doing work for companies and invoicing them for the hours? Cheers.

Did similar for about 6 months and, after making an appointment and discussing it with a friends accountant who I thought I should use, he advised that I just put some of the cash aside just in case I got caught. Never did (7 years ago now), although every Revenue letter I received for 2-3 years after was a bit of a knee trembler.

Well, I'm going to be doing work for one company quite often so they're putting me through their monthly payroll, so I assume that's an issue for me in terms of what I'm asking as I'd imagine some governing body would see the fact that I'm being paid through the company's finances. During my time freelancing I'll be within the tax-free allowance anyway, I'd imagine, but once I start full-time somewhere I don't want to get bollocked by HM Revenue for not declaring what I made before.

Yeah, they'll wanna be invoiced on a weekly or monthly basis so they're gonna have records which will be passed on or at the very least be available for audit. My situation was slightly different in that I went from full to part-time on my regular job where my contributions are taken at source and was freelancing as a writer/journo so there was no consistent income (and, surprisingly there was rarely a request for invoices).

Ahh I see. So any idea what is it I have to do exactly in this situation? What forms, if any, do I have to fill out, etc? I literally have no clue.

declare it you two idiots.
but make sure you have enough "expenses" to make the tax minimal.
