Drop all those too old for 2014 World Cup and try to have a good tournament (quarter finals?) in Euro 2012. Lampard and Terry being out for these first two games can only be a good thing for looking forward.

Got to play Walcott, A Johnson, A. Young, Hart, Dawson and Lescott at the minute. Upfront would like to see Zamora and Bent with Crouch on the bench.

Barton is scum but deserves a look in if you ask me.

I thought Johnson was ok tonight. Young and Milner however....

Hodgson should have matched Italy up in midfield IMO Gerrard & Parker were getting overrun time after time

But overall don't think it would have mattered, England just not good enough in certain areas.

It's simple, theyre good players but they simply don't gel as a team. Young and rooney play great for united. England are just destined to be badly managed and be teamed with unsuitable players.

Some clearly aren't international standard.

wrong. their shortfall in basic technical ability is made up by the foreigners at their respective clubs. you ever wonder why you see players from other european, south american and african countries ply their trade all over europe and beyond and not one english player bar cole plays outside these shores, apart from the money, they can't!

Whole team played shit. Rooney looked like he smokes 30 snouts a day. Terry and Lescott just sat back the whole game. Every time they pushed up it looked like they were playing stuck in the mud. Was Gerrard even playing???? Parker plays most of the game sliding on the floor. We were awful and always will be. Club over country every time.

Nah man, England have a good set of players if they play to their strengths. Hodgson adopted Alex McLeish tactics. I hate that people are even blaming Young when he was clearly performing what he had been asked to do, he was continually tracking back following a player, yet still being asked to get forward it's a big ask man.

Rooney hardly got the same type of support around him, that he's used to at united as everyone's occupied with defensive duties.

Gerrard gave his all, but it wasn't necessary for him to be doing so much - should've been just been playing a much more centre role than having to go so deep.

It's a shame as Italy were DEFINITELY beatable, if played to their strengths.

Hodgson is also managing above his level, if you cant see after 120mins that Pirlo was their main threat and you still insist on not putting pressure on him - You're setting your team up for suicide against world class opponents. This ain't Fulham bud.

For who though?! If he took Young off I reckon it would've been a mistake as it would've fucked his system as I doubt they'd have tracked back like him.

Even bringing on Walcott was Basically pointless with these tactics against a team that can actually play football - as there was no supply just long balls.

Italians have about 7 players who are the spit of Gattuso and they could pass. We lost the ball so much and then didn't press or chase and gave them all the time in the world. A real disappointment, couldn't fault Hart.

What are the incentives for an English player playing abroad though? it's not just a case of them being good/not good enough.

You wanna live in a Cheshire mansion, drive a bentley and marry a glamour model while playing in the richest, most watched league in the world or move to France and learn french.

I'm just pissed cause I put before the match England to win on penalties 12/1 - £20

Then though fuck it Italy will win 10/1

Then cancelled the Italy one and put England back to win on penalties.

But still feel England can do better than they've been set out to play.

It's not lack of quality, the early 90's we had Linekar at Barca, Gazza in Italy, Waddle at Marsaille, Barnes, Hoddle, Platt, Cowans, Beardsley etc some of the best technical ball players in Europe but the national team was still shit. I think its more a mental problem. We struggle with players unable to adapt tactically too IMO.

Also it would help if Ashley Young got aids and died.

you're not wrong, a typical english player doesn't need to go abroad, their mentality is why push myself to learn another language adopt to a new culture and learn a different football philosophy when you can get all of the above in blighty but tell me which top level club on mainland europe would want to seriously sign (not paper talk) any of the twenty three that is in the england squad that would enhance their teams?

Different pov:

We clearly deserved it. Imo we actually wasted a good hour of game and energy not scoring when we had the chance during the first 60 mins. We will now pay the consequences on thursday.
We dominated the pitch mentally and technically, and i expected this, but also physically and this surprised me a lot!
You had a wrong approach to the match: same one Greece had against Germany, defence and counter attack, but this was not justified tonight as differences between the two teams weren't that big like it was for Greece! You should have played more!
Both teams have good players even though just a few of them are top class players. Difference is that you didn't have a strong team spirit as we have. Most of our players are average players that can do good in a good national league but that fail in Europe\big matches (Abate, Maggio, Thiago Motta, Balzaretti, Giaccherini and list goes on....). But they're all doing their best, really, and they're so committed to the team that i'm surprised!
Only thing i can say is that imo the tactical level of the Prem is lower than other leagues' ones, Serie A and Bundeslinga, in particular, and this reflects on the tactical skills of the national team.

Anyway, Pirlo's penalty fucked you up! A penalty like that kills all your confidence!

Q: "Why that penalty, Andrea?"
A: "I saw the goalkeeper was so on fire today, so sure of his skills....decided to try that"
