GJ only link system / dontlurk.me

I already briefly mentioned this in the bargains section - but in my (and probably many others on this forum) opinion there are too many lurkers sniping up the great often great bargains posted here. The best deals often sell out quickly - like we seen today again on Porters restocks. Lurkers don't contribute to this forum, often not even posting a thank you note. I believe we should try to have the best deals only available to GJ's - those who actually contribute to this forum. This will also give another (extra) benefit of getting the

I've taken the liberty of registering a domain - dontlurk.me for this and started to develop a bit on it already.

Essentially the idea is as follows

- Private link password posted in GJ section
- Whenever a GJ posts a deal which he thinks should be exclusive to GJ's he can 'mask' the real link by going to dontlurk.me - adding the GJ password to it, and converting it into a link like http://dontlurk.me/fdj92Fhd
- Whoever clicks on the link will be required to enter the GJ password - if the password matches it will be transformed to the masked link. If not - bad luck

This way we can still keep posting everything in the threads (i.e. no need to use private twitter or other private sites) - but just with masked URLs. Of course the smarter lurker can still try to find the real link based on description; but at least it will make it harder. Of course we dont need to do this with every deal posted - but for some deals I believe we should/

I haven't asked permission for this - so if people are against this idea I'll just park the idea

Not a bad idea for sure - but would require substantial more development and would 'compete' with the forum in terms of links posted. Maybe such an idea would be better suited for a new release of Fuk?

It says they're looking to make some really big improvements in the early months of 2009, like GJ only forums. Pretty excited!

Why not just do it from the FUK facebook page?

Good idea. I have no idea about the feasibility of this but I think it would be a lot more accessible if there was a box/widget in the GJ section on FUK to just paste the link of the item and let it automatically generate the dontlurk.me url. In effect you don't even need to leave FUK

m15try has a good point - I could allow the form to be posted straight from the forum - to make it even easier. I will purely focus on basic functionality now but this is something I'll have a look at after.

imo deidricks solution works for everyone and will be a good standby until fuk sees a revamp
