House letting advice/help

I arranged a house for next year with friends a few months back thinking I was staying put, but now I'm pretty certain I'm leaving. I paid an original deposit/agents fee(?) of about £200, which I know I wont see again. But then had to pay a further £780 when tenancy agreements etc were sorted, think this covers first couple of months and some other legal bits. However as I paid this over the phone I haven't signed any contracts. One of the other lads is set to go and sign contracts/pay his £780 tomorrow, will we be able to transfer the money I've paid over to his name? (Then he can give me the cash and I'll only lose the original £200) Or, I doubt it very much but, if I just explain the situation will they just refund me the £780 as I haven't signed any contracts?

should be able to change the tenancy agreement for the new name as long as the other guy has good references can't see any problems. you don't want your name on it. he can just give you the cash.

you could always not pay rent for the last month or so and let them keep the other cash in leiu of rent.
by the time they kick up a fuss about it..which they shouldnt if they were going to refund you the money anyway..you will be gone. and not ripped off.
