How can I make shiny leather into dull leather?

I have a leather jacket I bought years ago that's in a really nice style, but the leather is a shiny, polished finish.
Can anyone tell me how to change this to a dull, worn finish?

Has anyone tried washing a leather jacket on a low temp in a washing machine?

Cheers

Thanks -I have thought about using a fine grade sandpaper, but I am concerned that will scratch the leather. Have you tried that?

Contact a supplier of leather products and get a can of matt leather finish and then wipe over with alcohol before spraying on the new finish.

If you dont care about damaging the finnish of the leather you can use some paint thinner, or nick the misses nail polish remover, just put it on a damp cloth and give a few coats letting it dry each time to your desired finnish

i wouldn't recommend washing it, no sir, it'll buckle like paper.

it depends what kind of finish it has, some are easier to treat than others, but for a quick dulling you could try saddle polish (gives a matt finish).

you can get saddle polish from most cobblers, and if you take your jacket in to one, they can probably recommend a suitable chemical to age it up a little (they can definitely do it for boots, reckon you'd have to ask very nicely to get them to do a jacket).

other than that, you could use the tried and trusted method of garment assault - sandpapering it, rubbing it against brick walls, driving over it, etc.

A mate of mine "distressed" a jacket using sand, it's softer than sand paper and gives a more gentle effect, sandpaper can be a bit brutal. Just get the sand and rub gently into the leather, can take a long time but will look less like you've been atacked with a Black & Decker sander. Wear gloves, or you end-up with no fingerprints.
