How to get rid of stains on my boots?

I remember seeing someone ask this a few weeks a go but I can't find it now.
My brown leather brogue boots have got a load of stains on the front of them, alcohol and various other crap I expect. What's the best way to clean them? Should I just try polishing over them?

Are they the Autograph 'waxed' leather ones, because I don't know if it would be different for waxed leather.

Not sure if they're waxed leather, but they're these.

I scrubbed off the sticky residue which was making them look a lot worse, then used some neutral colour shoe cleaner and it's helped them fade and they look fine now.
