wooo,,gonna head over to thailand for a week from Sunday,
Gonna stay in Bangkok sun night, monday, tuesday, leave for Phuket on weds morning
planning to meet a friend in Phuket from the Weds-sat night fly home sun morning...

recently people have been telling me Bangkok is very grotty and sleazy,
Do you think spending two full days/nights there is too long? would i be better off doing just one day/night and then going down to Phuket early and wait for my mate there?

I found the only place which was grotty and sleazy was the (obvious) Patpong area, where all "those" kinda clubs are. Two days will be enough, you'll have time to check out the night market if you want and other places like Playground and Club 21. Then there are the tourist places like the Grand Palace etc.

Post some pictures when you get back, I've often thought about going there but never got round to doing it.

Firstly, not sure if it should be mentioned here, but well done Brad on closing the YSI thread, long overdue. It was always my gut feeling that people could have got in serious $hit over it, but looks like all providers (much much obliged for your materials btw) have dodged that particular bullet.
Also, this is a bit of a hijack (and I know that there is an existing Thailand thread, but....) going to Thailand tomorrow for a few weeks. Excitement is bordering on debilitating.
So, I am figuring I might get myself a bespoke suit or two when there. Any fuk'ers had any note-worthy experiences of doing this (good or bad)? Just have it in my mind that I should at least contemplate this, but am still unsure. Probably just get pi$$ed and sleep in a hammock or something for the few weeks. And, yes, I will post some pics when I return as I always loved checking everyone else's out!

Bangkok feels grotty the first couple of times you head through it. Not sure how it'll be for a short stay, but by the 4th or 5th time of using it as a travel hub on my 4 months in SE Asia, I loved it. It's chaotic, smelly, humid, and plain weird, but it's also buzzing with energy.

Remember, the majority of tuk tuks are hustlers, never believe the first thing they tell you, esp when it comes to the opening/closing times of major sites. And if you meet a friendly 'teacher' who informs you that the site you're going to is closed, and then just happens to spot a 'tuk tuk driver who isn't his friend, oh no, oh no', just continue on your way to the very much still open tourist site.

Maybe shorten your stay there at the beginning and have longer on a beach. Of course you could get there and absolutely love it from the off. It's no surprise it's on the top 5 of peoples favourite cities, just not an instant smash for me.

If you do find it getting you down, head to MBK as an obvious escape. Obviously not cultural, but you can grab a film and enjoy the air con and comfort for a bit.
