It is a variant of Krav Maga, (which is an Israeli martial art) mixed with pressure points/knockout points (Tardemet is Hebrew for "knocking out/blacking out"). It is a fluid, intuitive and most importantly practical method of self defense which is useful for both beginners to martial arts, or as a supplement to your regular club. It is composed of strikes, locks, grappling, with a contemporary edge of a focus on defending yourself from multiple attackers and from weapons.
With a combination of technical and intuitive knowledge of how the body works, combined with acclimatising oneself to stress in difficult and threatening situations, we offer an effective way to defend yourself on the streets. There is no tradition involved, in that we are constantly testing and verifying the practicality of techniques. If something does not work, then we scrap it immediately- in a similar fashion if there is anything new or different to what has already been established, or anything from another martial art we'll incorporate it.
PM me for times, locations, cost, any more info about the club.
It is Oxford based so I guess that limits it to a few FUKs but lurkers are welcome. Just wanted to advertise the club to a non-student base because quite frankly they make for more reliable members.
As part of the FUK discount I'll be letting people come free for the first few weeks, saving you a fair bit and giving you around 10 hours of free martial arts.
When I was looking for a martial art to take up, Krav Maga looked very wierd, it may have been that particular class only but they combined all the martial arts with torah readings and generally sounded like quite hard line jewish mossad guys which I didn't think I would fit into that well and I wasn't too keen to do a martial art that is quite forceful with thier religion.
I decided to opt for Wing Chun a traditional chinese martial art, as bruce lee studied it and it looked cool, they have this 'sticky hands' technique of blocking. As its chinese and probably taoist they didn't seem like they would force religious thinking on you or exlude you if you didn't follow thier beliefs.
It turned out that the teacher was a devout muslim and pretty much three quarters of the class were muslim, there was a definite bias towards them, the class was stopped halfway through so that the teacher and the islamic members of the class could pray and the minority of the class was just left to stand around by themselves. was very odd and I ended up leaving as I felt very out of place
lol never done any torah readings before...never had any religion infringing on my martial art before and I never will let it.
@AAA- it's completely the opposite. Krav Maga is a very ugly and insistently practical martial art, there is no part of it that is supposed to "look good", that video is very flashy and I said that when I posted it.
And Eliotness- Bruce Lee barely studied Wing Chun, and the Wing Chun community for the most part want to distance themselves from him. While he started off with Wing Chun, what later became Jeet Kune Do (at least as you see it in the cinema) is a combination of western boxing, fencing (if you look at the footwork it is very, very similar) and many other martial arts.
rez, at one point in the video is he showing us how he would rip someones throat out though? It definatly looks like thats what he is trying to show would happen.
i know that bruce lee moved on and developed jeet kune do.
the fact that he initially studied wing chun was nonetheless one of the things that drew me to it.
I don't think he's trying to show any wacky indiana jones "KALIMAL!!!" shit- if you grip someone by the windpipe and pull it, it fucking hurts and makes you spaz out in a "SHIT I'M GOING TO DIE" kind of way.
Fair enough. Wing Chun is properly cool and interesting, you should definitely seek out some classes that aren't as mental as the ones you described.
Edit- Mr White Krav would not be that helpful in MMA, mainly because a lot of the stuff we practice would be against the rules. Krav Maga is for defending yourself in the street against a violent attacker, not for fighting a guy in a cage with rules and a referee.
(that's not of course to say that mma isn't applicable in the street etc)
Double Edit- Have edited the video with another, this one is much better.
