IBM Thinkpads are very well made, and some have fingerprint recognition security, which is way cool. |

vaio's suck - search vaio ram issues, monitor driver problems, power supply issues... the list goes on. dells suck - unless you get one through work or for free. ibm - not the pretiest but probably the sturdiest. |

I've worked with Sony Vaios for a while now and they are OK at best and prone to hardware faults. Toshibas are fine - reasonably reliable and very cheap for the entry level models. Compaq / HP are poor quality compared to most other laptops I've used and 2 major companies dropped them as their standard after just 1 year as they did not live up to the sales pitch. IBMs are far and away the most reliable of the bunch although they are not flashy. They make great corporate machines because of the low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) which includes the resale value, maintenance and amount of support time normally needed. IBMs also have the best quality keyboards in their class which makes a big difference if you have to do much typing. There isn't much flex in the base as you type like you get on other laptops. Some models don't have a touchpad which in my view is a great thing - they are inaccurate and always end up looking dirty. The "nipple" takes a little getting used to but is so much better. If you don't need flash stuff and want a great workhorse the IBM is worth checking. I bought a load of the R50e model for £360 before they upgraded the processor to the Centrino and got the 15" screeb, 40Gb disk, 512Mb RAM, wireless networking and a DVD burner. You can probably get them cheaper secondhand now. I've been working with IBM laptops since 1996 so have had time to form an opinion thanks Iain |

At home, I use a Thinkpad complete with a 'nipple' and even though it's an ugly fucker, it really is by far the most reliable machine i use (which includes several different macs and pcs). My advice would be to listen to Uncle B, he clearly knows his stuff. |
