Prometheus - Happy I had Orange Weds for this, even more glad I didn't go with my original plan of seeing it in IMAX. The first hour and a half-ish was great, but the ending felt so rushed |

Prometheus looked brilliant, but the second I stopped to think about any of it, the plot fell apart immediately. I know everybody is all 'but it's Ridley Scott...', but look at the films he's made over the last few years: Body of Lies? A Good Year? Kingdom of Heaven? Fucking White Squall? Not sure why I thought Prometheus was going to be some sort of game changer. On a different note, just watched Limelight. Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton being old together is amazing. |

Avengers - good for what it is, had more humour than I first thought (albeit quite cheap laughs) Also, rant: on Orange Wednesday, this cost me nearly £17 for two tickets. What the f*ck?!? |

it ended with more questions than it answers......also set it up for the next one. Every film has to end with the posibility of a sequal thesedays. |

The Raid, hugely overhyped. Few good scenes but spoiled by lots of bad choreography and too much filler. |

Himizu, not as amazing as Love Exposure but still pretty great. Fantastic acting from the two kids in it... |

Kingmob -- is it the appeals to historicity, or the attempt to make some grandiose statement analogous to the present day that is supposed to change my mind? Another 'Ridley Scott gets really meta moment'. Honestly, I find Kingdom interesting as a concession to history, but I also think it's full of some truly shite performances... |

Kingdom of Heaven DC is a war movie. Kingdom of Heaven general release is an action film. |

I wasn't interested in its bearing on contemporary events. It's attempting an epic in the Lean vein and, for me, it's got some great performances. Norton being one, even behind that mask. I think watching the DC, you get a sense of how easy a film can swing between a terrible film, and a great one. Anyway, you're slamming the mediocre version of the film so, like I said, watch the DC and see if your opinion changes. |

GO - not seen it for 10 years, so good. Yet another thing that makes me miss the 90’s. Soundtrack is decent aswell. |

It's certainly attempting to be a Lean epic, I just don't think it pulls it off, and yes I'm talking about the director's cut. Per Rez' comment above, it obviously, drastically alters the end product -- though the same argument could be made for dozens of films that get butchered at the behest of getting target demographics into cinemas. Norton is great in it, Bloom, less so; Jeremy Irons, for example, is just fucking ridiculous. I've listened to all of the commentaries and even attended to bloody academic debates on the film's merits (Scott Alan Metzger writes about it in various places), but in my opinion it, like Prometheus, doesn't deserve the praise heaped upon it. Though that's just my opinion ... I didn't realize I was opening a can of worms in my original missive! |
