I'm sure there was a brief discussion about this in a thread where noble was telling everyone how amazing cars are, but I cant find that.

My question is this:

I've recently restarted driving lessons, (having 1.5 hr lessons for £30) and want to know at which point lesson # I should be doing what exactly.

I'm on lesson #2 and am still doing the set off go round a few left handers, pull up, set off again.

Someone at work has told me that I should be already on main roads by the second lesson - is that the case?

Finally, how do you tell if your instructor is ripping you off?

Depends if you're any good or down right shit. Pointless just having lessons IMO. you need access to a car you can drive 3 or 4 times a week. I leant to drive in a 1l T Reg (not 1999.. the previous T reg!) mini. Only had 4 forward gears. god I hated that car! Laughing out loud Main thing though was I was driving every day. I had 15 lessons which I thought was 3 or 4 more than I needed.

People i know are starting driving now as well, i'm a late birthday so wont be starting for a bit yet but i cant see the point in people spending all the time and money on lessons, at this point in time where as a 16-17 year old i have little money from working in Spar for 3.90 an hour. Which isn't going to buy me a car very quickly let alone the insurance for it!
However i do know a lot of people whos parents are helping them out with it (mostly the ones without jobs...) And i'm the one who's been obsessed with cars since i was 2...

Bit of a rant there... But to help you with your questions, most people i know seem to be taking it very slowly over the first few lessons, then the learning curve goes rapidly up and before you know it your on dual carriageway. Just give it a few more lessons. Typically pricing is about 20pound an hour so 30 for 1.5 seems right, depends where you live and who you know and stuff though.

Lesson 1, back country roads, just so he knew how capable I was.
Lessons 2 - 3, roundabouts & going through town (traffic lights, pelican crossing etc..)
Lessons 4 - 10, manoeuvres.

I've now booked my test, and also brought another 10 lessons to tie me over, so he'll cover everything I need to know, and recap over things.

Still haven't got parallel parking right Evil, but 3 point turns & reversing around a corner I'm spot on.

I had been driving for a few months before then, parents brought me a car to learn in, so I've got it lucky, although I've gotta buy my own car, with my parents help.

Got another driving in 5 minutes, missed my last one because I was in the shower Laughing out loud.

just passed my test on the third go (its a hard area honest!) i went with my grandad whos a driving instructor, and i dont think theres a solid schedule which instructors should follow, a good instructor should progress as he thinks you are able.

Surely there is some rule against that?

Think he means his Gramps was his instructor, not the guy who took his test?

Had my first lesson today it was a 2 hour lesson but the first hour was just going through the controls, safety procedures etc. In my 45 minutes of driving I did left turns, changing gear, move off uphills/downhills/angles and the ground basics.. I stalled 3 times!
