Never been to new malden, just its next to kingston. People who get off at the train there do "look" a bit less professional though.

I have worked in Cobham and it is very nice, but very expensive based on house prices, train would be quite pricey as well. If we are throwing out distant places guildford or woking have direct trains into waterloo on express speeds but that will be quite pricey each day I think a season ticket is a few thousand!

Probably should have mentioned Kent is not permanent for me as a work place anyway, just where the buisness has setup a manufacturing plant. I have been solving problems there for nearly 1 year, will probably be working from home soon or somewhere else more central. If I moved to kent then I dont have to work there it would be a very big problem!

If you move near me stoney a drink would be cool! Cool

I don't get people that spend over a grand a month on rent. Doesn't it feel like a huge waste of money?

The flat I rent sells for around £235k and I would never pay that for it as it is not suitable really for two person occopancy, if I bought a couple of years ago I would have lots loads of equity as the prices fell.

Thought owning a flat in London was the dream if you can afford to, even if you don't want to live in it (buy to let) cos the price is only going to increase 10 fold by the time you retire, so you can afford that dream house in the country.

Brentford is OK, a few modern developments I did look around there but the main highsteet and stuff is very sketchy so not many local amenities, but you can get something for £900 PCM. Traffic at kew bridge is madness during peak times. It is on the district line though. I stayed in the travel lodge for the weekend there to get a feel for the area and it was a bit grim.

St George is building a load of new flats which will boost quality of the area but they aren't done yet.

Stoney - I live in brentford.

Would highly recommend it for you, your right on the m4 so getting to reading is a piece of piss. I live in one of the modern developments, 2 bed 2 bathroom newish build ground floor flat on the Thames with a big patio, 950 per month rent (cash arrangement).

I work in brentford so the walk to work is a big attraction. I worked in central for ages, commute is doable, always get a seat on the train etc ..Transport links are spot on with good busses, tubes and trains near by. Night busses from central run all night all the time to heathrow so easy to get back on the cheap on nights out.

Area isn't great but kew is only a walk away, chiswick, Richmond etc down the road.

Fucking hell, i genuinely didn't realise how expensive it was to live in London.

How much more do people get paid working in London?? 900 is a mad amount for a single bed place. I'm looking at paying 450-500 a month on a mortgage in a terrace in salford next year, and that's two bed.

I'd feel like i was setting fire to cash spending over 1k a month on rent and bills in a one bed flat in Kingston. I'd move to some right shitehole to save some of that dough.

there is better paid work in london but rents/property are still significantly higher as a ppn of income.

Yeah living up north is ridiculously cheap, I was paying 55 including bills for my place in Tokky when I lived in Liverpool. Now I'm looking at places around Angel for 300. Ouch.

most people dont get paid more (22k average), as a couple living in a flat 500 each PCM is fine when your both taking home £1500+ which is not a high wage.

London offers a small percentage of people the ability to earn far more than you can earn elsewhere, but that is a very small percentage. I was lucky to get such an opportunity to earn higher than the average but not banker money or even high professional money, but enough to be able to justify 1k rent even though I dislike it, the minimum you are talking is around £750 PCM around my area.

However I have a fully kitted out gym, underground car park, concierge, bins get taken out, minutes from the shops and restaurants, 30 minutes to central london, richmond park and the thames all within walking distance etc. All that costs you £250 extra per month. I only pay council tax + electricty here which is around £200 PCM.

2 bed in my place costs £1300 PCM so you could share and save money, but I have nobody to share with currently.

when i was sharing in richmond I was paying £750 (1500PCM) + bills in a 2 bed share, but with none of these extras. with all the bills and shit it was £900 PCM

house share in plymouth used to cost me £238 PCM inc bills so when I first moved up I thought the costs where insane, but I got used to it.

I didn't realise Surbiton was a real place until a few years ago, I always thought it was made up for Stella Street. It sounds like a made up name for somewhere in suburbia Oops

I thojght it was a ficticious place made-up for The Good Life.

I'm renting now and I love it, we've got a gym, two pools a sun deck a BBQ area and I don't have to maintain any of them, if soemthing breaks I call the building super and it's fixed by the time I get home from work. The apartment I'm in would cost about $500,000, no way could i afford that.

Buying my own house at 24 with my own cash is not working class Cool

Cheers HW, i just wondered if there was a ballpark average figure that signified the difference in pay. Say on average for the same job in London, your wage is 20% higher?

Hard to say, would need to see something like starbucks or McDonalds wages nationally to do a decent compare.

But the basic admin jobs in the local reed recruitment are around £16,000 maybe elsewhere they would be £13,000 so I guess 15 to 20% at the low end.

Congratulations on getting your own house at 24, definitely the best way.

You outright own your own house at 24? Or mortgaged?

Not bought it yet, searching at the moment but might be putting in a bid in the next few weeks. Of course mortgage, but no help from parents with deposit or anything. Well, apart from charging me cheap rent for living at home
