Ok, decided I might get a mobile phone.
If I want one which will work anywhere in the world (assuming my SIM works there) what do i need to look out for ?
Do different countries have different network types ?
I tried asking in a shop yesterday but the 12 year old assistant just gave me a load of techno-bollocks and I'm none the wiser.

Most phones brought on the well known networks will work abroad (02, orange etc)however when you reach your destination country you phone will find a roaming network and change. For example most phones will change from o2 to Movistar when you go to Spain. This can lead to extra charges so try to find out prior to using your phone.

Stay away from 3 as i have found my phone doesn't have the ability to roam and find a new network so is basically useless abroad.

Quad-band, which most phones are apart from the really really cheap ones (under £50) - 3G capable too is handy if you ever go to Japan. Just make sure the phone you do get is network unlocked so you can put in a local PAYG sim card and register that number with www.rebtel.com. That gives you cheap calls back home at the cost of a local (country you're in) call.

I'm not really planning to "roam" as such, I will probably ditch the UK SIM and get a new one abroad, I just wasn't sure what communication technology the phone would require so it's not UK only, but Quad-band sounds like the feature I need to look for.

Anyone help, lost my phone on the train on the way back yesterday from watching the footy. Anyway I need to get a claim number and report my IMEI number however, what happens next do they simply write me a cheque for the phone?.

You'll have to report it lost,if your after a claim number it'll be to the police and you'll only see a cheque if you've got insurance you also has to contact your network with the imei so they can block the phone

OK can do that but do they just fork out a cheque for the phone, I mean I could say I had a better phone than I did what proof do they need?.

imei tells you every single detail about the phone.
so when you tell them that they know what phone.

Sorry but can I ask does the insurance company provide just a replacement for the same phone or could I choose another model?. Really clueless about this stuff.

The 3G is not in production anymore, so you wont get that as a replacement.

Due to this it is likely you will get cash at a value the insurance company values the phone based on age and depreciation.

This is the same as when you write off a car that is no longer in production, or a computer / laptop / any other piece of electronics.

Depends if your insurance covers "accidental loss", bearing in mind this month trade ins and "insurance" claims shoot up on iphones by 1000% immediately after the new one is annouced. Eye-wink

Any phone you get here is a GSM type, just get it unlocked somehwere, dont. When you go to canada, you will need a provider that also uses GSM not CDMA. bother with a contract here in the UK if you are going canada within the next 18 months.

What is the deal with this free Wifi for 02? Mate spoke to an o2 advisor saying if you go into the home page and where it shows address www.wifi.o2.co.uk internet browsing will not come out data allowance, is this correct?

Not sure where to put this, thought I'd post here

Come to the end of my tether with iPhones, not getting on with my iPhone 5, lock button has broken, so have booked an appointment with the Genius Bar to get a brand new replacement. Will sell the be a replacement iPhone 5 and go for a Samsung galaxy s3/4. What's the best price I can get for selling the iPhone 5 and for buying and s3, and am I better off waiting to buy the s4?

Before you make your decision, I'd say have a look at the HTC One.

Dunno as I've never had an HTC before. Just going by all the rave reviews coming out about it. Looked nice in the shop I tried it at and want it as my next phone now.

Loads of reviews on youtube. Here's one comparing it to galaxy s4
