yo,,
i am looking to buy a D50,
i have found one for about £408 with the body, an 18-55mm lens + a 70-300mm lens a 1gb card and a bag.
is that a decnt enough deal do you think? or am i better off just getting the body and then buying a seperate higher quality lens? bearing in mind im stretching my funds to afford this one..Sad

Sounds good to me. The kit lens which comes with the D50 is pretty good, especially when compared to the kit lens which comes with the Canon 350D.

Oh of course, you live out there, don't you? I bet you can get some good deals on stuff like that, eh? Could you do me a huge favour? If you happen to see a Sony HDRFX1 (Hi-Def Camcorder), could you let me know the price of that?

Cheers

The 70-300 lense is ok.. worth about £60 in the USA... they are the G lense... ie nikons reallly cheap stock optics.

The 18-55 will sort you out if you're doing basic stuff... remember the nikon D-SLR's all have a focal length factor of 1.6 so the actual focal length of the lense is actually... 28-88mm which is a pretty good range ...

All in all £408 is a good deal... you could alway chuck the 70-300 on ebay and get about £50 for it...

You'll want to check that you're getting a decent memory card... you don't want corrupt photos... make sure it's a name brand pref. sandisk, lexar or viking.

One lense you will never regret buying is a 50mm f1.8 prime... (80mm with 1.6 focal length factor) so perfect for portraiture... and some other stuff!

ok,,here are my options,,

£408 for body + 1gb card + bag + 18-55 + 70-300 lens

£336 for the body and standar 18-55 lens

£269 for just the body

what is the best choice?

how much would a half decent lens cost me?

the £408 deal is a good deal and you wont be disapointed, the 18-55 lense you get with it is a good lense, you certainly not going to get anything massivley better with out spending quite a bit more. since i bought mine i have got the 18-70 you get with the D70 this cost me £140 for a second hand one.

i've got the d70 with the 18-70 lense (which is lovely).

someone bought me the sigma 55-200 as a gift. its a pretty decent lense, and cheap i think too, but it's not what i would have chosen. at the moment i'm looking for a decent wide angle lense for a resonable price.

I've got the D50, but with just the 18-55. That sounds like a good deal, if you were going to get the most out of both lenses, otherwise I would just get the kit. Subject to funds, I will hopefully be investing in a decent lens soon.

you wont regret it.

i dug up my old nikon fm2 slr the other day. it's such a sexy machine, i'm getting a new battery for it tomorrow so i can put a few rolls of film through it & use it as a back up. just about enough space in the bag for it. although i've only got a fixed length 50mm lense for it, I'm on the look out for the 24mm nikor for some nice wide angled action.

make sure you post some pics up jake...
