I am hoping that someone will be able to help me regarding VAT and parcel force. I moved here from San Francisco in 2007 bringing all my personal belongings with me including my laptop which were exempt from any VAT and custom charges.
Last month my laptop crashed and I found out that the extended warranty I purchased in California was not valid in the UK. A few weeks after it crashed my mom died so I went home to California taking my laptop with me where I sent it to be repaired and had it sent to my sister-in-law who then sent it back to me.
Yesterday I got a letter from parcelforce saying I had to pay a £63.81 V.A.T and £13.50 clearnce fees. Why do I have to pay these fees on my laptop which was purchased in California 2 freaking years ago that was exempt from VAT's and custom fees when I moved here? I have tried to call the customs number they listed on the letter but have had no joy as the line is constantly busy and I have tried all day. Can someone help me?!!!!!

no beef here canela, but what makes you believe that people on a 'fashion forum' can help you with this problem?
i mean, whatmade you join up here to ask this question, what made you think anyone here would be able to answer it?
surely there is a 'people with greviances against custom charges' forum somewhere that will be able to tell you exactly what to do?
and posting it more and more and more all the time, is not going to make any of us more intelligent on the ins and outs of the workings of the uk custom man either. Cry

I saw a thread about custom fees and parcel force on this site and I'd hope to find someone regardless if this is a fashion forum that could help me.

I think Parcelforce are Prison Warden cunts. Certain fees have to be paid, but their admin charges are a joke.

When the laptop was sent to the UK did you put a customs declaration sticker on there? If not then that's probably why you've been charged

Utilise that thing between your ears.

People on a fashion forum buy clothes. They buy clothes from the high street and they buy clothes online. Blieve it or not, sometimes they would even buy clothes online that are shipped from overseas! You see, when one purchases an item worth over a certtain value, which I believe is £38, custom charges are placed on it when it arrives in the UK. I have noticed that a lot of items of clothing, especially the fashionable ones, are worth over £38, therefore sometimes, even fashionistas have to deal with custom charges! It is a problem many fashion forum users have experienced, which leads me to believe this question is more than valid.

Recognise there's thousands of non fashion related threads on this forum, ie the xBox and computer help ones. So instead of discriminating against new users, either try to be helpful or shut the fuck up

If you still can't get your head around why he posed this question, feel free to PM me and I'll explain further.

Regarding the issue at hand, it's once which I have faced many times making FASHION RELATED purchases (you see, I have to include that or else I can't post here). You should have received a letter detailing the charges, and on it will be a telephone number to call if you believe you shouldn't have been charged. Call that number, and keep trying, or try calling direct to HM Customs. The fee is definately waivable in your case. Good luck!

Laughing out loud why you mad doggy?

This user is an in and out, they ain't sticking around for fashion. They want a specific answer google led them here because of how FUk is listed, it wasn't answered here so they spammed the same thing in another thread.

This kind of shit is answered by a better google search, government website or just phoning citizens advice bureau.

Everyone on here knows how customs works.

Considering this wasn't even a standard purchase import question, but a more elaborate serviced in the USA and then just posted back without consideration of import duty, its not even relevant to our normal buying questions.
